  • The Gender Specialist is the key staff member within an organization taking the leading of gender mainstreaming strategy and building capacities among his or her colleagues for incorporating gender issues into their work, in terms of content and processes.

  • The Gender specialist will advocate for increased attention to and integration of gender equality and women’s empowerment in ODA’s policy and programming.

  • Therefore, the Gender specialist work in collaboration with management, program and project team on regular basis and is responsible for the coordination, monitoring and evaluation of the organization’s gender mainstreaming strategy.

  • She /he will support gender mainstreaming by advocating, advising and supporting professional staff and monitoring and reporting on progress.

  • Further, she /he will work with consultants or external specialists.

    Duties and Responsibilities

  • Take the Leading role for the implementation of Organizational Effectiveness (OE) grant; support and enhance the capacity of organizational leaders to institutionalize gender equity and women empowerment at organizational and program level.

  • Lead and support preparation of gender policy implementation plan across ODA’s organizational structure

  • Promote gender mainstreaming in policy and program formulation process at organizational and program level of the association

  • Raise awareness and create understanding on gender concepts, women’s empowerment and gender mainstreaming approaches within the organization.

  • Support and encourage colleagues to promote equality of women and men participants in events, trainings and projects coordinated by the unit or office, as well as gender balance among the unit or office staff.

  • Work with program staff for inclusion of gender-specific objectives, outcomes and indicators, and activities in the program design.

  • Work with program staff to ensure earmarked funds for gender mainstreaming activities in each projects

  • Provide technical support for the inclusion of gender issue for management and programs/projects staff

  • Participate actively and contribute to activities of relevant meetings and technical working groups on gender issues organized by Government, civil society organizations and other partners

  • Develop and follow the application of gender mainstreaming checklist or the gender mainstreaming concept and the implementation of any other gender mainstreaming initiatives

  • Collect, analyze and disseminate data on a regular basis
    on the representation of women in all process of the organizational activities and program interventions

  • Document and report on gender mainstreaming approaches and activities in ODA’s various projects, including those supported through the Packard Foundation.

  • Develop, maintain and disseminate a resource-base of gender issues in work area of different departments and projects, which can be used throughout the different department especially Human Resource department and projects as necessary

  • Ensure organizational commitment to placing gender-balanced staff at all levels including at top leadership and management level

  • Assist in organizing capacity building for colleagues on gender concepts , gender equality women empowerment

  • Take leading role in the gender-disaggregated baseline survey and/or gender analysis in ODA’s various projects, including those supported through the Packard Foundation.

  • Lead, Investigate and solve gender related problems (If any) happened within the organization

  • Leading the adoption of best practices from other ODA’s model project on empowering women in mobilizing and improving women participation in development projects

  • Participate in designing and implementing women’s empowerment initiatives that Create opportunities for women targets in accessing resources, decision making

  • Do other activities assigned by program manager

    Job Requirements

    Educational Requirements & work experience

  • Post Graduate degree in Gender studies, Social work, sociology, public health or related social sciences from recognized University with at least 5 years working experience in NGOs on gender programs or related projects.

  • Strong understanding of gender mainstreaming, broad overview of Gender policy matter

  • Self-motivated, hard work and analytical.

  • Ability to communicate with people from different cultures and time zones.

  • Fluency in written and spoken English and local language/Afaan Oromo

  • Proficiency in MS Office tools, including Word and Power Point
