Founded in 2006, One Acre Fund supplies smallholder farmers with the agricultural services they need to make their farms more productive. We provide quality farm supplies on credit, delivered within walking distance of farmers’ homes, and agricultural trainings to improve harvests.

We measure our success by our ability to make farmers more prosperous: On average, farmers harvest 50 percent more food after working with One Acre Fund.

We are growing quickly. We serve more than 800,000 farm families in Eastern and Southern Africa, with more than 7,500 full-time staff and a $70M purchasing budget in 2019 alone. We are hiring for a Global Sourcing Deputy Director to support this scale.

Job Description

You'll report to the Global Sourcing Director and help lead a 50+ person team to implement a flexible sourcing strategy while preparing our systems for scale. You will develop outstanding leaders, maintain execution excellence, minimize costs, and improve purchasing processes to reduced waste across our value chains.

Your success means driving organization-wide sustainability and scalability by ensuring we can maintain the most important part of our program model at scale.

You will measure your success by achieving 100% on time deliveries, saving upwards of 5% across our annual procurement plan, building capacity and hiring talent to achieve an empowered team that values collaboration, aligning our sourcing strategies with broader organizational goals, and using durable processes to insulate clients from major risks.

More specifically, you will:

Set the Strategy: Support the Global Sourcing Director in setting and achieving a long-term vision supported by prioritized annual goals. You'll need to:

  • Set bold, achievable goals and inspire your team to meet them - this will require implementing impactful sourcing strategies that can scale across countries, minimize waste, and maximize delivery success;
  • Build collaborative working relationships across country leadership and global departments so that colleagues on other teams champion your work.

    Build an empowered, collaborative team:

  • Grow the careers of leaders across the sourcing team through regular touch points, targeted capacity building, showing appreciation, and sharing ongoing development feedback. Your goal is to maintain motivated and impactful staff at all levels.
  • You'll oversee multiple manager level staff directly and will take on more direct reports as you get comfortable in your role;
  • Motivate the full team around One Acre Funds' mission and ensure staff see the link between their work and our high-level goals – ensure the team is supporting its internal clients
  • Identify talent pools for recruiting high-quality supply chain staff
  • Guide execution excellence: Keep daily operations running smoothly by promoting 100% on time in full deliveries while inspiring creativity across the sourcing team to reduce costs to the farmer. You will:

  • Mitigate risk across the supply chain by preventing fraud and input loss with rock solid controls, adapting sourcing procedures to more nimbly respond to changing regulatory environments and program needs, and preventing quality issues from reaching clients;
  • Lead innovation in sourcing operations to save costs. Example focus areas could include long-term supplier partnerships that minimize price volatility and supply risk for high value goods and data-driven forecasting to improve order accuracy.

    Represent the sourcing team with internal clients:

  • Be the global
    voice for all procurement-related issues to country and organizational leadership;
  • Represent our organization with high-level suppliers and partners – this could include speaking at industry conferences and working with donors.

    Qualifications

  • You have 8+ years work experience as a general manager or leader in a fast-growing organization, and a propensity for innovation.
  • You have have worked in operations, supply chain, consulting, engineering, or manufacturing and combine a passion for improving processes with a humble approach to developing people. You're able to strike a balance between maintaining bold targets and showing compassion. You have the following:

  • A passion for building scalable and efficient systems and solving complex problems - you can quickly map out the full universe of solutions, evaluate them against qualitative and quantitate metrics, and form thoughtful recommendations.
  • You're comfortable making complex problems and ideas immediately comprehensible for others - you know how to tailor your communication style to the situation and audience
  • A passion for outstanding customer service - you're willing to the extra mile to adjust a process or tool to fit your clients' needs and care about creating high-quality deliverables
  • Experience working in a multicultural workplace and the ability to guide agreement, get others on your side, and build relationships
  • Even if you come from a different industry, you have familiarity with how supply chains function in our operating environment including common challenges and terminology
  • Comfort putting together easy to follow tools for project management, turning complex data sets into simple tables for easy presentation, and evaluating financial models for accuracy and clarity. You can competently turn large strategic ideas into bite size chunks of work and keep projects on track
  • Comfort managing people with varying skill levels and tailoring your managing and delegation style to get the most out of your team. You have a humble and inclusive approach to decision-making and developing others but also have the ability take disciplinary action when expectations are missed
  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required. A related Master’s Degree is an asset
  • A willingness to commit to living in East Africa for at least three years – this is a long-term, career-track role
  • Fluency in English - Swahili and French are helpful
