Office of the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for Sudan Political Affairs Officer Jobs in Ethiopia



Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement operational activities related to political affairs, conflict prevention, mediation, and transitional security arrangements.

  • Provide technical expertise on inclusive stabilization arrangements, particularly ceasefire and cessation of hostilities.

  • Coordinate and supervise research and analysis on political/security issues related to Sudan.

  • Prepare briefing notes and talking points for senior staff.

  • Advise on negotiations, rules of procedure, and approaches to political issues.

  • Develop and maintain relations with government officials and stakeholders.

  • Design conflict resolution and mediation initiatives; advise and participate in negotiations.

  • Assist in planning and coordinating programmes requiring mission/inter‑agency involvement.

  • Represent the team at round tables, seminars, and conferences.

  • Provide substantive support in formulation of programme of work, budget, and medium‑term plan.

  • Perform other related duties as required.

    Competencies

  • Professionalism – Knowledge of preventive diplomacy, mediation, and conflict resolution; strong understanding of Sudan’s political/security dynamics; ability to draft and analyze quickly; persistence under pressure; gender perspective integration.

  • Teamwork – Collaborative approach, values input, supports group decisions, shares credit.

  • Planning and Organizing – Clear goal setting, prioritization, risk management, efficient use of time/resources.

    Education

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Political Science, International Relations, Social Science, Economics, Law, Public Administration, or related field required.

  • First‑level degree plus two additional years of experience may be accepted.

    Work Experience

  • Minimum 7
    years’ progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, or conflict resolution required.

  • Minimum 2 years’ field experience in political affairs in a UN peace operation or similar international organization required, including Africa.

  • Experience in conflict or post‑conflict settings required.

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in political outreach, facilitation, analysis, advice, and reporting required.

  • Experience supporting good offices or mediation efforts required.

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience on security arrangements, ceasefires, and cessation of hostilities required.

  • Experience on peace/security issues in the Horn of Africa, including Sudan, desirable.

    Languages

  • Fluency in English required.

  • Arabic desirable.

  • French is also a UN working language.
