Job Summary

  • Through technical leadership, innovation, and collaboration, the Senior Adviser WASH (Sanitation) will support sustainable and equitable Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) outcomes aligned with UNICEF's Strategic Plan 2026–2029.

  • The role provides technical leadership on sanitation systems strengthening, quality improvement through digital solutions, equitable access to safely managed sanitation services, and technical support to UNICEF Country Offices.

    Key Focus Areas

  • At-scale sanitation system design.

  • Sanitation system planning and readiness assessments.

  • Quality improvement through digital solutions.

  • Equitable access to safely managed sanitation services.

  • Country Office focal-point support and technical advisory services.

    Education Requirements

  • Advanced University Degree (Master's Degree or equivalent) in:

    Civil Engineering
    Environmental Engineering
    Environmental Science
    Natural Sciences
    Social Sciences
    Public Health
    Water Resources Management
    Or another relevant technical discipline.

  • A Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field combined with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree.

    Work Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of professional experience with national or international organizations in one or more of the following areas:

    Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)
    WASH financing
    Project management
    Consulting
    Technical assistance
    Research
    Related development sectors

  • Demonstrated experience supporting sanitation and WASH system strengthening initiatives.

  • Experience delivering technical leadership in complex WASH programmes and sector development efforts.

  • Strong project and programme management skills.

  • Ability to work effectively within
    multidisciplinary and multicultural teams.

  • Excellent organizational and planning abilities.

  • Strategic thinking and systems-thinking capabilities.

  • Global perspective and ability to drive large-scale sector change.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

    Language Requirements

  • Fluency in English is required.

    Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Knowledge of another UN official language, including:

    Arabic
    Chinese
    French
    Russian
    Spanish

  • Experience implementing complex or large-scale WASH programmes in development and humanitarian settings.

  • Experience supporting WASH governance and system strengthening in both rural and urban environments.

  • Experience implementing WASH programmes in multiple country contexts, particularly in low-income countries.

  • Experience developing high-level partnerships, advocacy initiatives, and representation at regional or global levels.

  • Experience working within or alongside the United Nations system.

  • Strong understanding of UNICEF programming approaches and WASH initiatives.
