Overall Responsibility
The Oncology Pharmacist is responsible for preparing, verifying, and safely dispensing chemotherapy and other cancer-related medicines.
The role ensures appropriate drug therapy, monitors treatment regimens for efficacy and safety, educates patients and clinicians, and supports the multidisciplinary oncology team to achieve optimal clinical outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Review oncology prescriptions for appropriateness, dosage accuracy, drug interactions, and patient-specific factors.
Prepare and dispense cytotoxic and other cancer-related medicines in line with established safety standards and treatment protocols.
Ensure safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous drugs in accordance with national and international guidelines.
Monitor and report adverse drug reactions and therapeutic outcomes.
Counsel oncology patients on medication use, potential side effects, and treatment adherence.
Train clinical staff on chemotherapy protocols, medication updates, and safe handling practices.
Maintain oncology drug inventory and ensure timely procurement of essential medicines.
Oversee stock rotation, expiry monitoring, and storage conditions for cytotoxic medications.
Participate in regular audits to ensure compliance with quality and safety standards.
Assist in developing and reviewing oncology formularies, policies, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy from a recognized institution.
Certification or specialized training in Oncology Pharmacy.
Valid practicing license issued by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.
At least two (2) years of clinical pharmacy experience; oncology experience is preferred.
Working knowledge of chemotherapy protocols and hazardous drug handling is essential.
