Job Vacancy: Laboratory Technologist

Nyanza Reproductive Health Society (NRHS) is a non-profit organization with its headquarters in Kisumu dedicated to improving reproductive health of men and women.

NRHS has several research projects related to HIV prevention and reproductive health. It runs support groups for PLWHA and Key Populations, and is working with the Ministry of Health to scale up HIV Prevention and Treatment.

As part of its expanding research portfolio, NRHS wishes to recruit a research laboratory technologist to receive, verify and analyse specimens, record results on appropriate forms and report results promptly to the clinical staff.

Job Title: Laboratory Technologist

Location: Kisumu County

Reporting To: Laboratory Manager

Job Description:

Purpose: Responsible for receiving, verifying and analysing specimens, record results on appropriate forms and report results promptly to the clinical staff.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Prepare the laboratory equipment and specimens for tests.
  • Assist in collecting and performing quantitative and qualitative laboratory analysis of blood, serum, urine and other biological specimens from study patients.
  • Laboratory assay tests will include, but not be limited to: light microscopy, culture (e.g., E. coli, N. gonorrhoea), antibody testing, specimen staining and interpretation (e.g., Nugent’s criteria, detection of gonococcal diplococci), antimicrobial resistance testing.
  • Keep proper and clear documents of tests performed and results as per protocol.
  • Record test results in research study databases.
  • In partnership with procurement and stores, manage the consumables and equipment inventory
    and place timely orders for re-stocking of necessary items.
  • Assist and participate in the collection and packaging of specimens for transfer to other labs.
  • Keep information about clients in strict confidence.
  • Be fully responsible and accountable for NRHS resources assigned.
  • Maintain high standards in good laboratory practice (GLP), laboratory safety, and laboratory hygiene/ infection control.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs).

    Qualifications & Competencies

  • Minimum Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology or equivalent from a recognised institution.
  • Registered by the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technologist & Technicians Board.
  • Prior GCLP and Human subjects training is desirable.
  • Minimum of 3 years working experience working in a busy clinical or research laboratory with previous work in microbiology.
