About The Organizations:

Evangelical Ethiopian Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY) was established in 1959 with 20 000 members. Today, the church has more than 11 million members across the country. The annual increase in membership in 2017 alone was more than 420 000.

The church is organized into 40 synods, and further decentralized into parishes and congregations to ease access to members at community levels. The Norwegian Mission Society (NMS) is a voluntary organization, rooted in the Church of Norway. NMS consists of voluntary involvement from people and congregations who pray, give, and collect money for the work.

Its history goes back to 1842, when it started mission and diaconal work. NMS seeks, together with partner organizations, churches, and individuals throughout the world, to work actively to equip each other to share faith in Jesus, fight injustice and end poverty.

NMS has a framework agreement with Digni which means that it is responsible for ensuring the quality of the applications and reports for projects which are receiving governmental funding.

The Norwegian Lutheran Mission (NLM) is an independent voluntary Lutheran organization established in 1891 to send missionaries and organize support/prayer groups in Norway.

Presently, the organization is involved in evangelistic and development work in approximately 15 countries in Africa, South America, and Asia. The work in Norway encompasses congregations, prayer houses, mission groups, camps as well as institutions like kinder gardens and schools.

NLM also has a framework agreement with Digni which means that it is responsible for ensuring quality of applications and reports for projects which are receiving governmental funding.

Digni is an umbrella organization for 19 Norwegian mission societies and churches engaged in long-term development cooperation.

About The Project:

The big increase in membership of the EECMY as described above led to a growing need of various synods to decentralize. EECMY had to positively respond to the local request for decentralization. The church has the obligation to capacitate leaders for the existing and also emerging synods, parishes and congregations.

The EECMY-Leadership Capacity Development Project was designed to help EECMY build the capacity of leaders at different levels of the church.

The LCDP project run from 2020-2022 with financial and professional support from NLM, NMS, and Digni.

The overall goal of the project was: “Capable and steward leaders with a commitment to address the vision and mission of EECMY are created by 2022”

  • Objective 1: “Church units leaders’ management and leadership skills improved by 2022”

  • Objective 2: “Leaders equipped with knowledge and skills of conflict resolution, peacebuilding, and conflict transformation, peaceful coexistence among leaders and members in the church developed”

  • Objective 3:
“Empowered leaders in all synods are able to integrate and institutionalize “Use Your Talents” as a key diaconal service”

To achieve the goal and objectives, the project has provided Training of Trainers courses for a total of 128 leaders from 32 church units (synods and institutions) all over the country. These leaders have in turn provided training for leaders at lower levels of the church structure.

However, due to Covid-19 and political unrest in parts of Ethiopia, not all activities could be carried out as planned.
