Job Description

Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) works together for just world with people and organizations across the world in more than 20 countries to eradicate poverty and injustice.

We provide emergency assistance in disasters and work for long-term development in local communities. NCA is also member of the ACT Alliance, one of the world's largest humanitarian alliances. The Alliance consists of organizations in over 140 countries across religious faiths.

In Ethiopia, NCA established its country office in 1974. Program areas for 2016-2020 include: Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Reproductive Health (RH), Climate Resilience (CR) and Humanitarian Aid.

In addition, NCA/E in collaboration with the Church of Sweden (CoS) commencing a peace building program in Ethiopia and seeking a Program Head to provide NCA, CoS and their implementing partners with technical advice and direction for the joint NCA/CoS managed peace building.

Therefore, we would like to invite interested and qualified applicants for Peace Building Program Head position.

Purpose of the Position:

The program head will support the joint NCA/CoS and implementing partners overall management of the peace building program in Ethiopia. The Program Head will conduct ongoing analysis of evolving landscapes to inform program strategy and implementation; provide guidance on capacity development support provided to partners and other stakeholders; ensure conflict sensitivity and incorporation of a do-no-harm approach throughout project activities of NCA Ethiopia.

He/she will contribute to ensuring successful functioning of project activities, development of technical tools and resources, annual work planning and budgeting, programmatic reporting, and sharing of insights and lessons learned with internal and external stakeholders, as appropriate.

Length of Contract: 1 year with the possibility of extension based on performance and availability of fund

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in peace; conflict prevention, management and resolution; political science & international relations; democracy and governance; international development fields.
  • Minimum 8-10 years of experience working in managing related projects, in range of organizations, working experience for faith-based organizations have added value.

    Knowledge and practical experience including:

  • Development or implementation of peace building and conflict transformation projects in relevant humanitarian and development fields;
  • Analysis of conflict, conflict management, and institutional dynamics, and assessment of their implications for relevant programming;
  • Role of faith-based organizations, and other community based and traditional
    security; community security/safety processes, methodologies, including the relationships and linkages between local level approaches and their potential for building trust and resolving conflict;
  • Religious Actors, men, women and youth, and peacebuilding
  • Experience in understanding of role of religious and traditional authorities and community based-security in countering violent extremism;
  • do-no-harm/conflict sensitivity programming and management.
  • Gender mainstreaming and the role of women in peacebuilding and reconciliation.
  • Best practice and report writing skills
  • Required skills and technical experience in peace building and conflict transformation including:

  • Conflict analysis: analytical tools, methodologies, theory and practice, formal and informal institutions.
  • Conflict prevention: systems strengthening and supporting different stakeholders promoting peaceful transformation; and building local CSOs, and faith based organizations capacity.
  • Conflict sensitivity: Application (and support/training of others to apply) of conflict sensitivity and do-no-harm approaches to strategies, country and individual programs and projects at all stages, including design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, and risk management frameworks.
  • Knowledge and understanding of national and regional conflict dynamics in Ethiopia.
  • Strong networks engaged in peace work.
    Strong inter-personal, negotiating, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication skills with diverse groups of stakeholders with different levels of seniority and ability to maintain and nurture relationships and key partnerships.
  • Excellent people skills with the ability to develop others and to impart knowledge and experience in an accessible, clear, and respectful manner according to the stakeholder needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage religious sensitive programs and situations.
  • Excellent written and oral communications with relevant computer skills.
  • Ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Strong personal integrity and commitment to accountability.
  • Able to work independently, able to prioritize and self-motivated.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven track record of expertise working on peace building program, and knowledge/experience working in partnership with local actors preferably with faith-based organizations.
  • Fluency and proficiency in English including writing;
