Purpose of the position:

  • For individuals aspiring to embark on a career as a Research Psychologist.

  • These positions can be utilised to comply with the requirements for an internship in Research Psychology as outlined by the Professional Board for Psychology of the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), Form 107.

  • This position will prepare the individuals for a wide variety of possible scenarios within a research environment where a transdisciplinary approach is taken towards project planning, data gathering, dissemination and development of non-clinical interventions.

    Minimum Requirements...

  • Proof of registration as Masters degree student in Research Psychology or proof that the candidate has successfully completed a Masters degree in Research Psychology.

  • If the candidate is still enrolled for the Masters degree in research psychology, proof that the Masters’ study is at an advanced stage (e.g. taught modules completed and/or research dissertation in advanced stage) will have to be submitted.

    Responsibilities:

  • Research and Project Management

  • Understanding Project Terms of Reference and the writing of a research proposal including the project budget

  • Literature review

  • Data Gathering (Design study; adapt and develop data
    gathering instruments; undertake pilot study; fieldwork)

  • Data analysis and interpretation of results

  • Dissemination of results

  • Research Ethics whilst conducting research

    Job Specifications...

  • Proficiency in literature review, different research approaches/designs (Qualitative and Quantitative)

  • Proficiency in data gathering, data analysis and interpretation, and ensuring rigor in research (Qualitative and Quantitative)

  • Relevant knowledge of legislation on ethics and basic project management

  • Computer literate

  • Ability to work autonomous, in a group or as an individual

  • The ability to use e-media for the purpose of communication, workshop presentations and research

  • Excellent time management, ability to work under pressure and meeting strict deadlines, the ability to adapt to various settings and adjust behaviour accordingly, excellent interpersonal and intrapersonal relations, high level of coping and stress management, team player, willingness to accommodate the research unit for the greater good.

  • Demonstration of language proficiency in order to function optimally in the various multilingual environment of the NWU

    Recommendations…

  • 1 Year experience in research project conceptualisation, data gathering and analysis

  • 1 Year experience in Project management (including management of funds)
