Purpose of the position:

  • To fill an existing vacant post to teach Life and Natural Sciences.

  • A junior lecturer/lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the institution, and to carry out activities to maintain and develop his/her professional career relevant to the profession or discipline in terms of research and community engagement.

    Minimum Requirements...

  • Lecturer: Master’s degree (e.g. M.Ed, M.Sc) with specialisation in Biological Sciences (.e.g Natural Sciences, Zoology, Botany)

  • Junior Lecturer: Relevant Hons degree with specialisation in Biological Sciences (e.g Zoology, Botany)

  • Initial teachers qualification with majors in Biological Sciences (e.g Zoology, Botany, Physiology)

  • SACE registration.

  • 2 years applicable Life Sciences and or Natural Sciences teaching experience at school level

    Recommendations

  • Initial teachers qualification with Chemistry and or Physics will be a strong recommendation;

  • A relevant PhD;

  • Teaching experience at tertiary level;

  • Research publications in accredited journals

    Essential competencies

    Functional/technical competencies (knowledge and skills)

  • Fundamental Knowledge of Biological Sciences concepts to teach Life Sciences and Natural Sciences content modules for undergraduate B.Ed and Hons students;

  • Knowledge of dynamic teaching- learning technologies

  • Good computer skills in Word, Powerpoint, Excel, etc.

  • Use of blended learning environments, e.g. Internet and email

  • Demonstration of language proficiency in order to function optimally in the various multilingual environments of the NWU.

    Behavioural competencies.

  • Good communication skills

  • Good interpersonal Skills

    Job Specification...

  • Teaching: Teaching of modules in the B Ed, PGCE, B Ed Hons, on contact and distance mode.
    Research: Furthering of own qualifications. Involvement in research in general (e.g. publish in accredited journals, presenting papers at conferences.

  • Community engagement.
