Job Overview:

Our client in the insurance sector is looking to place for a position of Chief Operating Officer.

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) provides leadership, management, and vision necessary to ensure that the Company has the proper operational controls, administrative and reporting procedures, and people systems in place to effectively maintain and grow the business and to ensure financial strength and operating efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy and Planning

  • Actively participate in the development, implementation and execution of strategic marketing plans in support of the corporate strategy.
  • Prepare, in liaison with the department Heads, concept papers, periodic progress reports and annual reports showing organizational achievements against planned targets as well as providing justification for performance variances and areas of improvement.
    Identify and implement opportunities for improved organizational effectiveness and increased productivity within the business.
  • Lead planning efforts, establish trends and forecasts, for business production and premium collection, both short and long-term planning (monthly, half yearly and annual).
  • Monitor the progress of key initiatives and priorities by meeting regularly with heads of units to track results and challenges, ensure that departments meet commitments and priorities are being executed.
  • Monitor departmental budgets, actuals and forecasts.

    Technical Oversight and Operational Control

  • Monitor risk acceptance and claims settlement processes to ensure that ORGANISATION General Insurance meets its financial obligations and produces acceptable underwriting results and loss ratios based on acceptable and sustained operating margins as set out in strategic plans and budgets.
  • Ensure that the underwriting criteria for each level of risk is appropriate to the premium and policy terms being offered and where necessary specify and vary the products and terms being offered and ensure that they are sound, sustainable and known to Operations staff.
  • Proactively discuss with the CEO any underwriting, risk proposal trends, underwriting, claims and client service issues which may be a cause for concern.
  • Work with clients and business partners to identify opportunities to introduce technology solutions that drive improved operational controls and cost savings.

    Product Review and Development

  • Regularly analyse product performance and liaises with the CEO and the Operations team to implement appropriate improvements in line with consumer needs.
  • Liaise regularly with the Operations and sales teams to develop products that leverage the company’s competitive edge.
  • Provide leadership for the product development teams by maintaining consummate market intelligence and periodically reviewing existing products to enhance their quality; to examine on an ongoing basis possible new business potential in traditional and non-traditional sectors, and subsequently formulating plans for developing and launching relevant insurance products and services.

    Financial Management

  • Work with operations team on prioritizing activities towards maximizing financial value of the organization.
  • Infuse the organizations with a sense of entrepreneurial urgency and financial discipline.
  • Work with finance and support departments to review and analyse monthly P&L, and business statistical trends to identify and report undesirable trends and potential business opportunities and make recommendations for action.
  • Work with the finance team to assure that financial reports accurately reflect the financial position of the business.
  • Assist the CEO to prepare and present monthly and quarterly business performance reports and board papers; such reports will present the financial condition of the organization in sufficient detail for the board and management to draw appropriate conclusions about the
    financial results, financial strengths or weaknesses, liquidity and overall success of the company.
  • Ensure that there is continual and vigilant monitoring of expenses against budgets, and monitoring growth in revenue streams.

    Business Development

  • Participate in the process of generating revenue from new and existing brokers and clients, identify broker needs in order to help develop new business opportunities in liaison with the Business Development teams.
  • Maintain regular contact through meetings and other medium to ensure sustained growth from the broker market in respect of new and renewal business.
  • Monitor production figures on a weekly and monthly basis to ensure that production is in line with strategic plans.

    Managing Talent

  • Mentor, coaches and mobilize staff to achieve planned financial results.
  • Oversee training of new staff in the General business on work procedures and company policies to ensure effective client service.
  • Ensure staff are motivated, regularly updated on team performance and suitably equipped to perform their functions and project the professional image of the company.
  • Set clear objectives and KPIs for the team at the beginning of each year and develop individuals’ skills and performance to the highest possible level through detailed biannual performance reviews, mentoring and training

    Academic and Professional Qualifications
  • Bachelor Degree in business or a related discipline from a reputable university.
  • Professional qualification in insurance e.g. ACII, FCII or equivalent
  • Master’s in Business Administration is an added advantage.

    Experience
  • Not less than 6 years’ post qualification experience with at least 3 years at senior management level in operations.

  • Strong leadership and skills to foster teamwork; develop and motivate staff, resolve conflicts as well as ability to provide direction, guidance, momentum and vision in order to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills including ability to develop proposals, concept papers, position papers as well as write reports and prepare relevant publications.
  • Strong analytical background to provide strategic thought leadership.
  • Strong emotional intelligence and ability to work well with a wide variety of people and stakeholders at various levels, and across the organization.
  • Excellent planning and problem solving skills that enable quick identification and efficient resolution of issues.
  • Understanding of financial principles and operations of the business in order to drive profitability.
  • High level interpersonal and cross-cultural skills, including ability to build alliances and collaborative relationships with sensitivity to diversity.
  • Strong expertise in strategic management project planning and budgeting, resource management, implementation as well as monitoring and evaluation.
  • Ability to analyse and interpret financial data and apply management principles and practices in making sound business decisions.
  • Must be a self-starter, highly organized, and able to work well with people at all levels in the organization.
