About the Organization

NALA aims to break the poverty cycle by eradicating NTDs and other diseases of poverty. The NALA holistic approach eliminates the root causes of those diseases, leading to sustainable poverty reduction. We aim to achieve our mission by:

  • Assisting regional, national and international actors in designing and implementing programs for controlling Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) and other diseases of poverty using community engagement and health education for behavioral change.
  • Researching, developing and testing new NTD control modalities and tools.
  • Advocating for holistic NTD control models with stakeholders and decision makers that promote behavioral change.

    About the project

  • Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) are a diverse group of communicable diseases which affect more than one billion people, mainly populations living in poverty without adequate sanitation and in close contact with infectious vectors and domestic animals and livestock.

  • The Ethiopian Federal Ministry of Health has prioritized 9 NTDs for intervention: Trachoma, Onchocerciasis, Schistosomiasis, Soil Transmitted Helminthiasis, Lymphatic Filariasis, Podoconiosis, Leishmaniasis, Dracunculiasis (Guinea-Worm Disease) and Scabies.

  • The FMoH Strategic plan for 2016-2020 proposed a holistic approach which includes investment in health education, and water and sanitation improvements.

An emphasis was put on the need for creating a coordination mechanism between WASH and NTD sectors, which would improve the access of NTD endemic communities to clean water and sanitation infrastructure and hygiene services, thus creating an enabling environment for a sustainable behavioral change and achieving disease prevalence reduction.

  • NALA has been working closely with the FMoH and the WHO on increasing inter sectorial coordination as one of the main objectives for elimination of WASH related NTDs.

  • Several practical guiding tools have been developed to guide the coordination processes, from federal to district level. The project aims to strengthen inter-sectoral coordination for NTD elimination through integrated interventions of various sectors.

  • Besides development of tools, the project also focuses on establishment of multi-sector coordination platforms at all governmental levels.
