About M-Shule Mobile Education

M-Shule is the first adaptive, mobile learning platform in Africa to bring personalized educational tools to primary school students through SMS. Meaning “mobile school” in Swahili, M-Shule’s platform uses artificial intelligence to deliver personalized SMS learning support in Math and English, building students’ concept mastery, exam performance, and confidence.

Then M-Shule shares data and insights with their parents and schools to power better instruction and collaboration. By making 21st century learning possible with the simplest feature phone, M-Shule unlocks new opportunities for millions of students across Sub-Saharan Africa and the world.

About the role

You will be a major part of a small and agile team driving the first-ever application of artificial intelligence in primary schools in East Africa.

We have already built and are implementing our product in low-cost primary schools across Nairobi, Kenya. We now invite you to tackle projects like designing and implementing customer insights programs, using quantitative and qualitative data to understand learning performance growth, and helping the team test and iterate on assumptions to improve our business. Job Description:

  • Collecting, analyzing, and interpreting quantitative and qualitative data from a variety of sources to allow team to make decisions around user experience, product, performance, and strategy.
  • Designing experiments and projects to test impact assumptions, measure KPIs, and make recommendations based on your findings.
  • Developing and monitoring new and better systems for high-quality data collection, measurement, and management.
  • Creating compelling stories about our impact based on analyses to share with customers, team members, partners, and other stakeholders.

    Required Profile:

  • A desire to impact education, independent project management skills, and exceptional problem-solving abilities are all essential prerequisites on the M-Shule team.

    Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in quantitative field
    such as Economics, Maths, Statistics, Business, Finance, or Computer Science; other degrees acceptable if there was strong coursework in the above areas.
  • Master of some of Microsoft Excel, SQL/Linqpad (or other query language), R, and/or Stata.
  • Experience in working across quantitative and qualitative data to extract actionable insights and communicate recommendations to improve performance.
  • Flexibility and willingness to jump in and lead projects in a hands-on, fast-paced startup environment.
  • Strong customer orientation.
  • Enthusiasm and commitment to learning and collaboration across cross-cultural teams.

    Preferred Skills:

  • Familiar with Lean Data principles and methods.
  • Background in design thinking / human centered design.
  • Previous experience working in educational contexts and deriving insights from often “messy” data.

    Contract Details:

    Duration:

  • This is a 3-month contract position that will begin in November 2018, with the possibility of transitioning into a long term contract after that based on performance.

    Location:

  • Contract will be full-time and based in Nairobi, Kenya.

    Compensation:

  • Based on experience. We are an early-stage startup with many opportunities for growth.
