The Unit is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with dominant research themes
in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases
and cancer.
Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological
research, social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation studies,
the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the evaluation of
innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the development of health
policy and practice in Africa and worldwide.
Following the signing of strategic transfer
agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the
Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018.
The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health
issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with
established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala Districts.
The Unit is now
seeking an enthusiastic and experienced individual to fill the following position:

Reports to: Principal Investigators
Duty station: Kawempe
Contract Duration: 10 Months
Job Purpose:The Medical officer shall be responsible for the active recruitment into the Baby BRAiN study
and carrying out study investigations according to standard operating procedures.
In addition,
he/she will provide care for study participants and when possible other patients within the
neonatal unit as a member of the neonatal team.
Roles & Responsibilities Active recruitment of participants into the Baby BRAiN study by identifying eligible
participants and taking informed consent from parents.
Development and teaching of procedures and training tools.
Provide clinical care to study participants and conducts study investigations including
neurological examinations, blood tests, cranial ultrasound, EEG, assisting with transfer to
MRI centre. Also work as part of the study site hospital neonatal team in caring for
admitted neonates.
Collection of data, completing source documents and eCRFs and submitting these for data
entry.
Work to resolve data queries and ensure accurate collection of data.
Provide routine medical care for study participants alongside study procedures.
Work as part of the study site hospital team in caring for other admitted neonates.
Supervision of junior team members.
Maintain continued professional development (CPD) training and documentation of this
training.
Preparation of progress reports to UVRI REC and regulatory bodies (UNCST and NDA)
when required.
Conduct of continued professional development (CPD) training activities and maintenance
of documentation
of such trainings.
Performs other duties assigned by the project leaders.
Ensure research is conducted in accordance with the ICH Harmonized Tripartite Guideline
for Good Clinical Practice best practice/high standard.
Person Specification
Bachelor’s degree in medicine and surgery.
Postgraduate qualification in related specialty is an added advantage.
At least 1-year experience in clinical practice.
At least 1-year experience in a research setting working on clinical trials.
At least 1-year years’ experience in clinical practice in new-born or early child health
research.
Experience research involving new-borns with neonatal encephalopathy and, or early
child disability.
Previous experience of implementing research study protocols.
Previous experience in training and managing small research or project team.
Training and, or certification in neonatal clinical assessment investigations and
monitoring such as pulse oximetry, neurological assessment & neonatal EEG is an added
advantage.
Should be a registered Medical Practitioner with current licensure to practice from UMDC.
Understanding of ICH/GCP for human research.
Ability to initiate and/or support public engagement and communication activities.
