MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda research Unit Scientist B- Peri COVID Study Jobs


Job Purpose:

  • The position is responsible for planning, guiding, coordinating and supervising the smooth implementation of the study protocol.

    Roles & Responsibilities

    Principle Roles

    Project preparation

  • Ensure initial and subsequent submissions to the regulatory bodies are complete and all
    regulatory reports are submitted in a timely fashion;

  • Ensure a complete work plan and budget is developed, implemented and monitored with
    revisions as needed with input from key stakeholders; and,

  • Contribute to SOPs, data base design, institutional agreements, staff JDs and other
    multifaceted study preparatory activities as needed.

    Project coordination

  • Ensure the activities and outputs achieved are in line with the protocol, project plan and
    budget

  • Interpret microbiological results for the clinical team and act as a liaison for the laboratory
    and clinical teams for audits, queries and QC/QA activities;

  • Ensure integrity of study data through QA/QC activities/ procedures and strong data management;

  • Coordinate with the different internal and external stakeholders involved in the study including multiple Ugandan institutions and MRC/UVRI; and,

  • Liaise with clinical teams to ensure study procedures and documentation are in accordance
    with the protocol.

    Communication and reporting

  • Lead regular study team meetings and calls as well as organise regular project meetings;

  • Prepare and present study updates/progress reports to the Study Principal Investigator;

  • Conduct regular audits of blood culture timing and results to maintain a low number of contaminants;

  • Ensure complete documentation of study meetings and activities including internal and external communications; and,

  • Contribute to dissemination of study findings including through peer reviewed manuscripts.

    Other roles/duties

  • Study specific roles as per Delegation of Duty/ Authority document; and,

  • Other duties as may be assigned by the relevant authority as deemed necessary.

    Financial Management

  • Assist the Study Principal Investigator in conjunction
    with the operational and finance team
    to ensure strong budget and resource management in line with approved budget and sponsor
    and institutional requirements.

    Line Management Responsibilities

  • Supervise the multidisciplinary study team (MUJHU based) and liaise with off –site study
    staff and ensure that there is a well-defined and documented delegation of duties with
    ongoing performance management;

  • Ensure adequate initial and ongoing training of all study staff with substantive contributions to training activities and materials; and,

  • Identify any training needs and advise accordingly.

    Specifications:

  • Master’s in microbiological sciences from a recognised institution;

  • A medical Degree;

  • At least 5 years’ experience working in a medical research setting preferably in a
    senior role;

  • Experience co-ordinating complex clinical studies;

  • Experience interpreting microbiological results for clinical care;

  • Experience of collaborating with and managing multi-disciplinary project teams;

  • Experience of budgetary control and reporting;

  • Should possess knowledge of bacteriology and virology;

  • Should possess knowledge of obstetrics/pediatrics/neonatal medicine;

  • Should also have knowledge in infection prevention and control;

  • Possession of formal training in ICH-GCP is desired;

  • Should have the ability to think strategically, for example in the planning of resources needed; and,

  • Excellent writing skills and experience drafting protocols, reports, funding applications
    and regulatory documents.
