MRC/UVRI and LSHTM Uganda research Unit Laboratory Technologist – PGPI Jobs


Job Purpose

  • To participate in a variety of research and analytical laboratory support activities within
    MRC/UVRI.

  • The position receives specimens, conducts laboratory experiments involving
    molecular virology techniques for genetic analysis of a range of virus including HIV and SARSCOV-2.

  • The laboratory experiments support the National HIV drug resistance surveillance
    program.

  • To conduct laboratory experiments, make detailed observations, and analyses data
    according to SOPs.

  • They also ensure effective functioning of the laboratory while adhering to SOPs and health and safety guidelines.

    Roles & Responsibilities

  • Performs assays following study specific SOPs, like Sample receipt, Sample collection,
    transportation, processing, storage, nucleic acid (RNA/DNA) extraction and sequencing;

  • Produces reliable and precise data by performing SOP-guided laboratory experiments as
    assigned following GCLP guidelines, including proper labelling of specimens. Also, to
    Perform assays to fulfil the different protocols such as Transmission Threshold
    Surveillance, monitoring at treatment sites, among others;

  • Implements the LIMS and freezer works system to achieve good sample archiving and
    tracking practices;

  • Prepares for audits, work and support collaborative activities with other laboratory
    technologists at the MRC/UVRI and other laboratories in the country involved in similar
    work;

  • Be involved in the procurement (laboratory equipment, supplies and consumables) and
    preparation of reagents;

  • Be in charge of laboratory equipment and schedule, oversee the maintenance,
    adjustment, or calibration of laboratory instruments and apparatus;

  • Keeps stock and track
    of reagents, supplies and other consumables and compile lists for
    replacement orders;

  • Ensures that the laboratory workspace is organized and set up accordingly; and,

  • Assisting in capacity building through demonstrating practical procedures to new staff and student attachments.

    Person Specification

  • An honours Degree in Biological Sciences or its equivalent from a recognized University;

  • At least one year of experience working in a research molecular laboratory setting;

  • Hands-on experience and troubleshooting skills in DNA/RNA extraction, PCR and sequencing;

  • Skills in HIV sequencing, analysis and an understanding of HIV drug resistance analysis
    and interpretation;

  • Ability to work and troubleshoot molecular assays with minimal supervision;

  • Should understand GCLP guidelines for human research;

  • Experience in SARS-COV-2 diagnostics and genomics an added advantage;

  • Basic knowledge on data and sequence analysis;

  • Basic skills in scientific writing; and,

  • Should have good communication skills
