Job Purpose:

Formulate, implement and review of health policies, regulations, standards, guidelines and protocols. Undertake medical examinations and write reports. Conduct disease prevention, surveillance and control. Undertake health research, Provide forensic, medico-legal services, medical psycho-social interventions, Medical, health education and promotion. Facilitate training of interns and other health personnel and establish and manage health information systems.

Responsibilities:

Senior Medical Specialist responsibilities include:

  • Formulating and reviewing Medical health policies, strategies, guidelines and protocols;

  • Participating in the formulation of national health planning;

  • Overseeing provision of promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative health services;

  • Providing sub-specialized services to patients;

  • Planning and managing hospital healthcare programs;

  • Initiating and managing healthcare projects and programs;

  • Developing intervention activities and programs for training health professionals in community health and health management in hospitals/health facilities;

  • Initiating and coordinating operational and clinical research;

  • Facilitating implementation of research findings to improve quality of service delivery;

  • Coordinating and providing specifications for procurement of Medical health commodities;

  • Ensuring adherence to health standards and guidelines;

  • Facilitating training and development of Medical health staff;

  • Mobilizing resources and promoting partnerships and collaborations with hospital agencies and development partners in promotion of health programmes and projects;

  • Monitoring and evaluating provision of Medical health services at all levels;

  • Ensuring the implementation of quality management systems in Medical Health services.

  • Preparing planning and budgeting for the directorate;

  • Coordinating capacity development and performance management.

    Minimum Requirements

    For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:

  • Served in the grade of Medical Specialist for a minimum period of three (3) years or its equivalent.

  • Master’s degree in any of the following disciplines; Medicine, Anesthesia, Cardiothoracic Surgery; Dermatology, Ear, Nose and Throat, Otorhinolaryngology, Family Medicine, General Surgery, Geriatrics, Internal Medicine, Microbiology, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Occupational Medicine, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Surgery, Pediatrics and Child Health, Palliative Medicine, Pathology, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Psychiatry, Public Health, Radiology, Health Systems Management, Health Economics, Health Informatics, Epidemiology, Global Health Policy, Public Health Microbiology and Emerging Infectious Diseases, Biostatistics

  • Sub Specialization in any of the following
    disciplines; Medicine, Anesthesia, Cardiothoracic Surgery; Dermatology, Ear, Nose and Throat, Otorhinolaryngology, Family Medicine, General Surgery, Geriatrics, Internal Medicine, Microbiology, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Occupational Medicine, Ophthalmology, Orthopedic Surgery, Pediatrics and Child Health, Palliative Medicine, Pathology, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Psychiatry, Public Health, Radiology, Health Systems Management, Business Management, Health Economics, Health Informatics, Epidemiology, Global Health Policy, Public Health Microbiology and Emerging Infectious Diseases, Biostatistics or equivalent qualification from an institution recognized by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board.

  • Registration Certificate by the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board or Pharmacy and Poisons Board.

  • Valid 2024 practising license from Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board or Valid Practising license from Pharmacy and Poisons Board.

  • Specialist recognition certificate from the Medical Practitioners’ and Dentist Board or Specialist recognition certificate from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board.

  • Retention in the Medical Practitioners and Dentist Board register or retention in the Pharmacy and Poisons Board register.

  • Leadership/Management lasting not less than four (4) weeks from a recognized institution.

  • Proficiency in computer applications.

  • Fulfilled the requirements of Chapter Six (6) of the Constitution of Kenya 2010.

  • Demonstrated a clear understanding of Hospital development policies, goals and objectives and ability to integrate them into the Medical Officers’ ,Dental Officers’ and Pharmacists’ Function
