Market systems approaches and refugees’ social connections have a critical role to play in the West Nile refugee response. Mercy Corps Uganda seeks to learn about the role of social connections and the effectiveness of its market systems development in West Nile to inform our future programming, influence the response, and contribute to global learning.



The Research Coordinator is a strategic role within Mercy Corps, managing research and learning in West Nile, Uganda to inform future programming and contribute to a range of global research products on Market Systems Development (MSD) and the role of social connections in coping and recovery.


Specifically, this role will oversee the implementation of an exciting new 2-year OFDA research award in partnership with the Feinstein International Center (FIC) at Tufts University (USA), with the goal of

  • building an understanding on the ways in which social connectedness links to resilience and improved livelihoods for individuals affected by crisis, including South Sudanese refugees;
  • to examine the ways in which Mercy Corps’ MSD interventions influence social connections and vice versa.

    Responsibilities

    The Senior Research Officer will report to the West Nile Team Leader with dotted line reporting to the OFDA Research Manager, based in Juba, South Sudan.

    Fieldwork

  • Coordinate closely with the OFDA Research Manager, researchers from Tufts and research consultants to ensure that all research projects answer questions that are valuable to the Uganda program team and contribute to broader learning.
  • Together with the Research Manager, Tufts researchers and consultants, lead training of enumerators / data collectors and in-country team on sampling procedures, administering data collection instruments, and data quality control.
  • In collaboration with the key research personnel lead the training of enumerators on qualitative data collection tools, including interviewing technique, participatory rural approaches and other non-conventional qualitative tools such as journey mapping.
  • Implement field-based qualitative and quantitative research tools, including interviews, focus group discussions, and surveys.
  • Manage and provide oversight / quality assurance of data collection process, including managing enumerators and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Lead the qualitative data collection, including training and supervision of facilitators.

    Data Management

  • As needed, manage the transcription and support the preliminary analysis of the qualitative data.
  • Conduct data quality checks and support data cleaning and analysis as needed.
  • Maintain organized files for data and research so that they are accessible to researchers and program team, including database management.
  • Assist in the development of relevant research reports by sharing contextual knowledge and feedback.

    Team Coordination and Learning

  • Gather input and feedback from, and coordinate closely with West Nile programs teams on research questions, research design, and data collection processes to ensure that data and analysis is of high quality and aligns with research goals.
  • Support interpretation of results based on program teams’ and enumerators’ contextual knowledge.
  • Provide regular updates to West Nile program team about research findings. This includes providing informal insights at team meetings and leading presentations and feedback sessions at key points in the analysis.

    Accountability

  • Reports Directly To: Mercy Corps Team Leader for West Nile with dotted line reporting to OFDA Research Manager, based in Juba, South Sudan

  • Works Directly with: In-country programs, operations and finance teams; OFDA Research Manager; Senior Director for Research and Learning, Markets Economic Recovery and Growth Technical Support unit; Cash and Markets Consultant; Principal Investigators (FIC); and FIC team members (Research Assistant, Project Manager and others assigned to the research)

    Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in development, social sciences, or other related field; MA or PhD preferred
  • Outstanding knowledge of the political, cultural, and humanitarian dynamics in West Nile, preferably with experience having lived and/or worked in the region.
  • At least 3 years of experience conducting and managing field research in rural areas of Uganda, preferably in West Nile.
  • Experience conducting research within the context of humanitarian programming, preferably in a research or M&E role with an NGO.
  • Demonstrated skills in qualitative research methods, particularly interviews.
  • Experience managing a team of local enumerators, and providing capacity-building support
  • Experience conducting research for Market Systems Development (MSD) a plus
  • Experience conducting research related to refugees a plus
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Good organizational skills and ability to work under time constraints Self-motivated
