Mercy Corps responsibilities

For the duration of this internship assignment the intern will receive:

  • Accommodation in shared guesthouse in Karamoja sub-region
  • Per diem while out of duty station
  • Sim card to facilitate communication
    Visa costs
  • ISOS emergency medical evacuation insurance
  • Transportation between Karamoja and Kampala
    Field travel costs
  • Mercy Corps email address and online tools
  • All other tools, materials and communication requirements for this SoW to be undertaken

    Intern Responsibilities

    Intern will remain responsible for all costs associated with:

  • Air travel to/from Uganda
  • Medical insurance
  • Vaccinations
  • Living expenses
  • Providing an adequate computer to complete the necessary work
  • All other costs associated with the internship

    Project Description:
  • Mercy Corps is a leading global organization powered by the belief that a better world is possible.
  • In disaster, in hardship, in more than 40 countries around the world, we partner to put bold solutions into action — helping people triumph over adversity and build stronger communities from within.
  • Mercy Corps Uganda is implementing a five year USAID funded Activity named Apolou in the Eastern Districts of the Karamoja sub-region of Uganda.
  • The Activity is implemented in four Districts of Karamoja: Kotido, Kaabong, Moroto and Amudat.
  • It covers programmatic areas including: crop production, agricultural input sales, livestock production, veterinary pharmaceuticals, construction of household latrines, construction of small market infrastructure, WASH infrastructure repair, storing of commodities among other areas. The Activity has 7 subawardee partnerships including local CSOs and INGOs.

    The Activity has four strategic objectives:

  • Inclusive and effective governance contributes to food and nutrition security
  • Adolescent girls, Pregnant and Lactating Women, and Children under 5 are nutritionally secure
  • Adoption of improved WASH practices
  • Improved livelihoods and income support household food security
  • Apolou works with three local CSOs: Karamoja Peace and Development Agency (KAPDA), Nakere Rural Women’s Activists (NARWOA), and RiamiRiam Civil Society Network.
  • The identified intern will work closely with each CSO and the
    associated program technical team to ensure that the CSO is achieving identified objectives in their Capacity Development Plans.
  • Required support will include the organization of training, workshops, events and 1:1 learning sessions with CSO staff members.
  • Topics to be covered will include, program management, communications, and good governance, among others.

    Learning Objectives:
  • The intern will have a unique opportunity to understand the challenges and rewards of working with and for local Civil Society Organizations, while working in the fascinating context of Karamoja, Uganda, as part of an energetic and entrepreneurial team.

    Deliverables:
  • Successful planning and delivery of training and mentorship to three CSO partners demonstrated through a final comprehensive report including recommendations and associated training materials

    The Ideal Candidate:
  • A Bachelor’s degree in International Development, Management, Communications, or a related field with knowledge and/or interest in the field of international development, Master’s degree is preferred
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Experience and/or desire to support CSOs build their capacity, or experience working/volunteering with small organizations
  • Strong written and verbal communicator (English)
  • Outgoing, enthusiastic, creative, and a tremendous amount of flexibility
  • A self-starter who can work with minimal supervision and limited resources such as intermittent electricity or internet
  • Adventurous person willing to work in the least developed region of Uganda
  • Cultural sensitivity is essential
