  • Our client, a leading membership organization in the travel and tourism industry is seeking to recruit a suitable candidate for the position of Chief Executive Officer.

  • The organization works to enable a conducive business environment for the industry in Kenya by promoting the services of her members to the general public, protecting their rights and assisting them to optimize their businesses.

    Overall Job Description

  • Lead overall management of the organization operations in the country through: assisting the Board fulfill its governance function; Drive and lead the implementation of the strategic goals and objectives of the organization; providing the Secretariat direction and leadership towards the achievement of the organization’s mission, strategic goals and objectives ensuring that the Board, Members and Staff have sufficient and up-to-date information for effective decision making.

    Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities

    Planning

  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors and members to define and articulate the Associations’ vision and develop strategies for achieving the organisation’s strategic goals & objectives
  • Draw up and oversee the implementation of annual plans that support the organization’s strategic goals & objectives and correlate the same with annual operating budgets
  • Monitor and evaluate the organization’s performance on a periodic basis to ensure the short, Medium and long-term goals are met
  • Develop future leadership within the organization

    Management

  • Oversee the operations of the organization and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements i.e. Ministries of Transport, Tourism and the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority.
  • Create and maintain procedures/policy for managing secretariat operations as approved by the Board
  • Promote a culture that reflects the organization’s values, encourage high performance, and reward productivity
  • Evaluate staff performance on a regular basis

    Financial Management

  • Oversee staff in developing annual budgets that support operating plans and submit the same for Board approval
  • Manage the organization’s resources within budget guidelines
  • Ensure that staff practice all appropriate accounting procedures in compliance with Procedures & Processes Manual approved by the Board.
  • Regularly submit financial performance reports to the Finance Director and Chairman and to keep the Board committee duly informed on the same.

    HR Management

  • Manage and lead the human resources of the organization according to authorized Human resources policies and procedures that fully conform to current laws and regulations
    Recruit and contract staff, consultants and service providers in consultation with the Board
  • Periodically review HR Policies and documentation to ensure that they are up to date.
  • Marketing, Membership and Communication
    Working closely with the relevant
    Board Sub-Committee to manage the Marketing and communication portfolio
  • Working closely with the relevant staff, ensure that the content, production and distribution of all marketing and communication materials (posters, program, flyers, mail outs, brochures, calendars etc) conform to the organization requirements and standards.
  • Oversee press development.

    Industry Relationships

  • Serve as the secondary spokesperson and representative for the organization as required within the Board guidelines.
  • Ensure that the organization and its mission, programs, and services are consistently presented in a strong and positive image to all stakeholders most importantly, the Airlines, Ministries of Transport and Tourism including the State Law Office and Kenya airport authorities.
  • Actively advocate for the organization, Members and its strategic objectives Act as a liaison between the organization’s stakeholders and build relationships with peer organizations where appropriate.
  • Develop partnerships with relevant educational institutions and work closely to review and assess the travel curriculum on an ongoing basis.

    Strategy Portfolio Management

  • Principle officer managing the Lobbying and advocacy portfolio
  • Stay abreast of current trends related to the organization’s Strategic objectives and anticipate future trends likely to have an impact on the same
  • Collect data/information and analyse performance of each strategic objective.

    Fund Raising

  • Develop fund raising and revenue generation strategies and support the Executive
  • Committee in fund raising activities
  • Serve as a primary contact person in sponsor/donor relationships
  • Oversee staff in the timely submission of sponsorship/grant applications where applicable.
  • Additional details of exceptional aspects of demand of the role:
  • Frequent travel within and outside the home country

    Person Profile

  • A relevant university degree in law, business administration or similar. Master’s degree will be an added advantage.
  • A minimum of eight years of experience in business management, planning & financial oversight role
  • A minimum of three years of experience in senior management with experience in working with Boards and committees.
  • Excellent, proven interpersonal, verbal and written communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and supervise a staff team.
  • Demonstrated ability in effective problem - solving and mediation skills.
  • Proficient in computer skills and applications of contemporary ICT packages
