Background

  • Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is an international independent humanitarian medical organization that delivers aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters and exclusion from health care.

  • MSF offers assistance to people based on need irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.

    Accountabilities

  • Provide mental health nursing care, treatment and follow-up of patients within the scope of his/her professional competencies, and refer patients with conditions falling beyond his competencies, according to the context, MSF and other agreed protocols and universal hygiene standards/precautions, in order to ensure the quality and continuity of care for the targeted population.

  • Organize and carry out mental health consultations, care and treatments according to MSF or other agreed protocols and refer patients to other health professionals whenever necessary in order to provide the most appropriate treatment.

  • Detect cases with need of psychological or psychiatric care and refer them to the psychotherapists or psych clinical officers.

  • When needed, give psychological support to patients according to MSF protocols to improve mental health conditions of patients and enhance their functionality

  • Participate in health education of the patient (and family) when necessary, informing the patient and his/her relatives about the possible consequences of the illness and drug treatment to follow in order to improve the patient’s condition.

  • Promote and maintain confidentiality regarding all patient cases and records.

  • Participate in the department-related pharmacy management when requested (carrying out inventories, requesting re-supply, check storage conditions, doing follow-up of expired drugs, etc.)

  • Participate in the process of data collection and reporting when requested.

  • If applicable, identify Sexual Violence survivors and refer them to the medical team, so they can receive the necessary treatment.

  • Know and be aware of the importance and appropriate use of the Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)

    In consideration of a refugee setting

  • In addition to general mental health conditions and medical conditions falling under mental health in Uganda (e.g. epilepsy), provide consultation, diagnosis, treatment (both medical and psychological) and prevention for the following specific conditions:
    reactions to violence and trauma, bereavement and loss, survivors of sexual and gender-based violence.

  • Adapt consultations and treatments to children to provide child-friendly services.

  • Identify and assess referral destinations for higher level care and propose ways MSF could support these destinations if necessary.

  • Liaise with other actors providing mental health and psychosocial care for good coordination of activities and appropriate referral networks.

  • Identify children and adults with special needs and refer accordingly.

    Education

    Essential

  • recognized Psychiatric Nurse degree/diploma and registered with the appropriate health professions Council of Uganda

    Experience

    Desirable

  • 2 years of previous experience and previous experience in other NGOs

    Languages

  • English essential. Desirable local languages: Kakwa (Pojulu Bari), Arabic and Lugbara (Aringa)

    Knowledge

  • Desirable :computer literacy (word, excel and internet)
