Makerere University School of Public Health Research Assistant Jobs in Uganda;The Research Assistant will support the NIH‑funded Kisoboka II study, a five‑year project focused on reducing hazardous alcohol use and optimising treatment as prevention among men living with HIV in fishing communities.

The role ensures high‑quality, ethical, and protocol‑compliant research implementation through participant recruitment, data collection, and sample handling.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit, screen, and obtain informed consent from eligible study participants

  • Support participant follow‑up and data collection, including interviews and blood samples

  • Collect, prepare, document, and coordinate transport of blood samples per study protocols

  • Maintain study records, identifiers, tools, supplies, and equipment

  • Prepare daily field updates and participate in training, debrief, and review meetings

  • Support mobilisation, distribute participant incentives, and ensure compliance with ethics and confidentiality requirements

  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Project Manager

    Qualifications

    Education

  • Bachelor’s degree, diploma, or equivalent qualification with training in phlebotomy

    Experience

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience as a research assistant in quantitative health or psychosocial data collection

  • Proficiency in ODK, Kobo Collect, or similar tablet/phone‑based data collection platforms

  • Fluency in Luganda and English, with strong communication and confidentiality skills

    Desirable Qualities

  • Experience in fishing‑community or health research

  • Certification in Good Clinical Practice or Human Subjects Protection

  • Willingness to work in field settings, relocate or travel to islands, and occasionally work outside official hours
