Magoha Says KCPE Exam Results Will Be Out in Two Weeks

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has said the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education exam results will be out in two weeks.

Prof Magoha said marking the scripts for the 1.2 million candidates started Monday.

“We started marking the scripts two days ago and this will continue. Going by the progress, we shall spend a similar time like we did last year.”

“If we delay we shall get to that time but do not be surprised if we complete a little earlier,” Magoha said at the Kamkunji Sub-County container pick-up point in Nairobi during the last day of the test.

This means candidates may know their results any time from next week.

Quick marking

The marking of multiple-choice questions has been made easier by the acquisition of the modern Optical Mark Recognition which electronically scores the papers.

The OMR captures marked data from candidates’ answer sheets using specialised scanning.

The machines work with a dedicated scanning device that shines a beam of light on the paper.

The contrasting reflection at predetermined positions on a page is used to detect marked areas as they reflect less light than the blank areas of the paper.

With the new machines, scripts are marked in batches of 100 and 200 sheets, unlike the previous technology, which took hours.

The KCPE candidates yesterday sat their last paper, with the Education ministry reporting no major challenges.

Early Learning and Basic Education

PS Julius Jwan supervised the distribution of exam materials to schools at Kampi Ya Moto in Rongai, Nakuru County. Jwan, who was with county education officials, later interacted with learners in various schools, including Sun and Shield School in Kabarak.

“We are determined to ensure no time is lost. Marking of exams will be concluded within a short while and results released to allow students to proceed to secondary education by May,” the PS said.

He reiterated the government’s preparedness to have all 2021 KCPE candidates join high school in line with the government’s policy on 100 per cent transition.

More than 1.2 million pupils sat the KCPE exam that ended yesterday.

An estimated 831,026 students are set to sit the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education 2021 exam which starts on Monday.

Jwan said: “Any challenge shall be dealt with to ensure secondary schools accommodate all candidates who have sat the KCPE exam this week.”

Covid disruptions

Following the disruption of the country’s academic calendar by the Covid-19 pandemic, two national exams will be done this year.

KCPE and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) 2022 candidates will sit their final exams in December and early January 2023.

Jwan said the academic calendar has been properly designed to ensure enough time for teaching and exam preparation.

“There is no need for teachers to drag candidates into illegal tuition.”
