Purpose of the Assignment

  • The overall purpose of the assignment is to equip 70 refugee and host community teachers (may be online and later face-to-face) with knowledge, skills and attitudes for ensuring gender-responsive learning environments in schools.

    This will include:

  • Design, development or customization of training content covering key concepts of gender responsive pedagogy; analysis and assessment of gender-biased attitudes, behaviour and teaching practices with a view to shift these positively; experiential education activities and learner centered pedagogy; and trauma-informed teaching practices.

    · Delivery of training to 100 teachers, that includes simulation of selected activities involving every participant for a good feel of the elements of the GRP; and participatory identification of priority areas of intervention and good practices to mainstream GRP in refugee and host community schools.

  • Facilitate the development of school-based work plans to facilitate experiential gender-responsive school activities and learner-centered pedagogy, and creation of a peer network of gender-responsive refugee and host community teachers to enhance the adoption of GRP among teachers and administrators.

    The deliverables should be able to assist the LWF with the following:

  • A technical and financial proposal, with a clear action plan and timelines for conducting the assignment.

  • An Education in Emergencies GRP toolkit including a practical tool to inform new and seasoned teachers, creative and participatory activities for creating a gender-responsive classroom, a reference for school management to guide creation of gender-responsive school systems, a reference for creative engagement of community stakeholders in GRP, and a guide to support the monitoring and evaluation of gender-responsive school systems. This should be in soft and hard copy.

  • Conduct 5- to 6- day GRP training (online and/or face-to-face) to 70 participants drawn from two locations in South Sudan.

  • A detailed training report accompanied with signed/login daily attendance of participants, content covered, methodology used, pre- and post- training assessment records, school-based GRP implementation plans, and recommendations to LWF and the Ministry of General Education and Instruction (MoGEI).

    Scope of Work/ Work Assignment

    Under the supervision of the Education Coordinator, working closely with the Team Leader and the Education Manager and generally answerable to the Program Coordinator, the focus of the assignment will
    include:**

  • Design and development of a GRP Toolkit suitable for Education in Emergencies in consultation with LWF/WS staff.

  • Customize the GRP Toolkit into an interactive modular online course for self-paced study.

  • Provide criteria for selection of 70 refugee and host community teachers to be trained.

  • Lead the delivery of GRP training for 70 refugee and host community teachers whether online or face-to-face.

  • Guide participants on development of school-based action plans for mainstreaming GRP.

  • Provide remote support in monitoring of GRP mainstreaming based on school-based action plans.

  • Facilitate reflections on the results of GRP mainstreaming between LWF/WS, school administration and management, and MoGEI.

    [Qualifications or Specialized Knowledge/Experience Required

    Qualifications

  • University (preferably advanced) degree in Special Needs Education or Orthopedics, Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy or related fields. A social-based approach is required.

    Experience & Competencies

  • At least 5 years of national and international experience in designing and facilitating complex/sensitive interactive training in a humanitarian context or developing countries is required.

  • Strong knowledge of gender issues in Africa, particularly as they relate to girls’ education in emergency/crisis situations

  • Teaching experience and/or knowledge of pedagogical approaches and instructional design.

  • Excellent skills in review and design of models and toolkits

  • Good experience in pretesting of training manuals, toolkits and other teacher related materials

  • Experience in teacher training or developing in-service teacher training materials/modules

  • Experience in adapting training content and approaches to pandemic contexts.

  • Previous knowledge of LWF/DWS refugee operations involving Education programs would be an added advantage.

  • Adaptability to working in hostile environments.

  • Proficiency in English.

    Languages

  • Fluency in written and spoken English is required.

  • Basic knowledge of Arabic will be an added advantage.
