KSPCA Animal Welfare Field Inspector Jobs in Kenya

The Kenya Society for the Protection and Care of Animals’ (KSPCA) mandate is to promote, foster
and advocate for humane treatment of all Animals in all situations.

The Society is run entirely on donations from the public and runs a number of social media campaigns and events and runs a
team of inspectors and animal care staff in three locations; Nairobi, Naivasha and Mombasa.

Each location has a shelter where a number of cats, dogs, donkeys and other animals are cared for as KSPCA staff work to rehome them with members of the general public.

  • The KSPCA is currently recruiting for the position of Animal Welfare Field Inspector.
  • The staff will work under the guidance of the Senior Inspector and the Animal Welfare Officer.
  • He/she will generally be responsible for implementing the animal welfare aims of the Society and ensuring that the Society’s policies are adhered to.

    He/she will assist the operation of the KSPCA
    shelter and in enforcing ordinances governing animal control functions such as animal care, field enforcement, shelter maintenance, licensing, and related assignments.

  • *Please note that this position may require one to work in all types of weather; noisy environment with exposure to noise, dust, chemicals, animal dangers, odors, fumes, aggressive/dangerous and sick animals.

    One may also encounter dangerous situations with unfamiliar and unpredictable
    animals.

  • The position reports to the Senior Inspector and the Executive Officer.

    Duties:
  • Investigating complaints of animal cruelty or abuse, and rescue injured, stray or
    abandoned animals.
  • Advising animal owners and the public on animal welfare and building a good relationship
    between KSPCA and the public
  • Writing reports documenting complaints and animal welfare/cruelty investigation.
  • Controlling and/or impounding animals of all varieties including stray animals, unwanted
    animals, wildlife, deceased animals and sick/injured animals.
  • Performing humane euthanasia of animals and dispose of the deceased animals as
    required
  • Promoting and teaching humane slaughter of livestock and monitoring slaughterhouses
    country wide when required
  • Repair and maintenance of humane slaughter equipment
  • Implementing the feral cat scheme
  • Checking on and ensuring that the care of the animals in the shelter is satisfactory when at
    the headquarters or on duty
  • Liaising with the relevant Government bodies and personnel
  • Promoting animal welfare and compassion
  • Lecture the general public, schools and other agencies on animal care, safety and welfare.
  • Giving advice on animal welfare and building a good relationship between the KSPCA and
    the public
  • Operate an animal control vehicle to conduct patrols, respond to calls for service or
    assistance, and complete work-related errands.
  • Keep animal control vehicle, tools, and equipment clean and maintained in good
    working condition
  • Adhere to KSPCA vehicle management policies and procedures
  • Ensuring effective and timely maintenance, servicing and
    repair of KSPCA vehicles in order
    to minimize down time
  • Provide recommendations for lowering vehicle-operating expenses
  • Any other duties as required for the smooth running of the Society and the welfare of all
    animals

    Person Specification
  • Holder of a Diploma in Animal Health or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution
  • Experience working with an animal welfare organization in a similar capacity will be considered in lieu of qualification
  • Registered with the KVB
    Skills & attributes:
  • Have good understanding of county based and national animal welfare laws and related
    legislation. Have some knowledge of enforcement process and procedures
  • Knowledge and ability to work with a wide variety of animals including domestic animals and
    livestock
  • Ability to work with a wide variety of people; to remain calm and professional in tense
    situations.
  • The nature of the job position will involve frequent interaction with members of the
    public and other law enforcement agencies.
  • A professional of high integrity, intelligence and energy
  • Have good inter-personal and communication skills communicate effectively, both verbally and
    in writing; to prepare reports in a clear, concise and organized manner;
  • Proficiency in computer applications
  • Able to react quickly and calmly in emergencies and stressful situations
  • Be in good physical condition and skills to capture and restrain animals. The position will
    involve frequent lifting, carrying, walking, and standing; a full range of body movements
    including pushing, pulling, climbing and crawling.
  • Hold a valid driver's license with a good driving history
  • Have compassion towards animals
  • Be able to work independently and make mature judgments regarding field activities
    demonstrated through critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Possess the ability to calmly interact with highly emotional individuals and build relationships with community partners.
  • Ability to learn quickly and retain information about various animal-related laws, regulations, policies and procedures
  • Adapt easily to changing demands of work conditions and irregular working hours (nights,
    weekends, holidays and standby shifts
  • Team player with other internal departments
  • Respectful of all KSPCA staff
