Major investment programmes are often complicated, fast-paced, and carried out in an environment prone to change and uncertainty. Organisations implementing growth plans or executing large capital projects and programmes frequently encounter challenges ranging from unpredictability, cost overruns and schedule delays.

KPMG’s Major Projects Advisory team support public and private sector organisations to maximise value from their major capital investments programmes. We help clients create change that matters and enhance delivery confidence by bringing innovative ideas to the way projects are planned, designed, procured, financed, built, and operated.

We provide focused industry knowledge, multidisciplinary teams, and substantive experience in managing both the financial and technical aspects of major capital investments and transformation programs.

KPMG’s East Africa Infrastructure Advisory team is therefore seeking an experienced PMO Senior Associate with 4 – 6 years of experience in project / programme management; project controls; procurement of infrastructure works and/or infrastructure project management.

This individual will work with a multi-disciplinary team of KPMG professionals with project finance, project management, procurement, accounting and consulting backgrounds.

Position Summary

This role is geared for those with in-depth experience in construction / infrastructure project management and/or transaction advisory from business case development and feasibility studies, through construction procurement, project financing and project delivery.

This individual will be part of the infrastructure team supporting in the delivery of high-quality services to top tier public and private sector clients by bringing his / her advisory expertise to the team. He / she will be responsible for assisting with delivery on major capital / infrastructure projects, including those for government, private sector and development partners.

Infrastructure sub-sectors include transport, water and sanitation, renewable energy, power and utilities, oil and gas, construction, commercial real estate, and social infrastructure.

Role and Responsibilities

This individual will assist the leadership team in day-to-day engagement management on
specific projects and will:

  • Assist the Managers, Directors and Partners in delivering services to our various clients in the real estate, construction and infrastructure space.

  • Provide leadership, direction, and guidance to junior team members.

  • Review the work of junior members of the team and provide training where necessary.

  • Develop and present client materials including status reports, project reports and presentations

  • Actively participate in the hands-on delivery of projects and programmes which may include programme design and development; benefits and quality management; stakeholder management; portfolio management; programme and project planning including milestone management; and risk and issue management.

  • Preparation of proposals to target clients and support in business development efforts.

  • Maintain relationships with key client contacts.

    Academic/Professional qualifications and Experience:

    The ideal candidate has:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a technical or business-related course from a reputable university.

  • A professional body accreditation would be an added advantage

  • Project feasibility, options, procurement, appraisal and / or project structuring experience

  • 4 – 6 years of experience in project/programme management, managing a PMO and/or project controls; managing construction procurement; preparation of feasibilities studies

  • Strong interest in large complex projects, Public Private Partnerships (PPP), infrastructure, government, construction and engineering;

  • Be a team player, capable of coaching and developing other staff.

  • Strong research, analytical and problem-solving capabilities.

  • Good interpersonal and client relationship skills.

  • Strong report writing skills.

  • Strong Microsoft Excel / data analysis and manipulation skills.

  • Strong written and verbal business communication skills.

  • Proven ability to multi-task and ensure effective delivery of competing priorities to meet targets and objectives

    Personal Attributes:

  • Good communication (written and verbal), numeracy, presentation and analytical skills

  • IT proficiency, especially Microsoft Office

  • An eye for detail

  • Team player with leadership capability

  • Excellent coordination and planning skills
