Research Scientist I (Physical Oceanography) – (Ri.11)
Duties and Responsibilities
  • An officer at this grade will be required to independently initiate and implement research projects.
  • Duties and responsibilities at this cadre will include:- problem identification; formulating research project/ proposals; study design;
  • Implementing research projects;
  • Engagement in inter-disciplinary research; preparing technical reports and scientific publications;
  • Using other methods to disseminate research findings in their areas of specialization;
  • Providing guidance to junior research scientists/interns in their areas of expertise; and any other duties as may be assigned from time to time..

    Requirements for Appointment

    For appointment to this grade, a candidate must have:

  • Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum grade of C+ (Plus) or equivalent;
  • Bachelor’s honors degree or equivalent degree in any of the following fields: Physical Sciences/ Oceanography, or other relevant disciplines from a recognized University;
  • Master’s degree in any of the following fields: Physical Sciences/ Oceanography, or equivalent;
  • Knowledge in programming in MATLAB;
  • Knowledge in oceanographic instruments (Acoustic Meters, CTDs, etc) as well as oceanographic software (e.g. RDI and Nortek software) is essential;
  • Ready to work out of office and outside normal working hours;
  • Able to work on survey vessels at sea;
  • Evidence of engagement in community work or other related contributions;
  • A minimum of six (6) peer reviewed publications with at least three (3) first authorship as a Research Scientist II;
  • Participated
    in development of at least one research proposal; and
  • Satisfactorily served as a Research Scientist II or equivalent position for a minimum period of three (3) years.
