    Job Purpose:

    KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme (KWTRP) is one of the leading research centres in Africa.

    The Programme engages in a wide range of research on the main causes of ill health in Africa.

    We have capacity in laboratory, clinical and epidemiological research and an opportunity to harness this capacity to study anti-microbial resistance (AMR), a pressing problem for human health in Kenya and globally.

    The post holder will be responsible for defining a specific area of AMR work and taking this forward with support from PIs with clinical, epidemiological and laboratory skills.

    The post holder will be encouraged to use the resources currently available in the Programme (i.e. clinical surveillance data, sample collections, demographic surveillance) and also to develop applications to support further funding.

    The post will be funded for 3 years, with an expectation that funding will be sought for further work.

    The post would best suit a doctor with a higher degree in clinical research, or a non-clinician with a PhD in a relevant area such as epidemiology or microbiology.

    We consider that important research for public health on AMR can be based on a variety of different training backgrounds, and the ideal candidate will be one with a strong background in one of the disciplines listed below and an ability to engage with cross-disciplinary work with appropriate support.

    We will support a suitable attachment for experience in bacteriology for the successful candidate if needed.

  • Joint supervision of laboratory technicians.

    Indirectly Supervises:

  • None

    Budget and Resource Responsibility:

  • A modest consumables core budget for pump-priming
  • Additional grants as awarded

    Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsibility for developing and leading an area of personal research in AMR.
  • Seeing that optimum use is made of the data and resources already available within the Programme on AMR
  • Proposing funding applications for AMR work
    Overseeing and completing original research work addressing aspects of AMR.
  • Communicating with colleagues in the Programme to coordinate research in AMR.
  • Providing input on clinical trials aspects of developing proposals and funding applications where AMR is relevant.
  • Coordination with regulatory affairs, surveillance and clinical service departments.
    Membership of a Data Governance Committee and a Centre Scientific Committee.

    Qualifications :

  • A PhD or post-graduate medical qualification relevant to research or evidence of
    post-graduate ability in research
  • Bachelor’s degree in medicine, science, public health or a related field.
  • An interest in multi-disciplinary research
  • Experience in research of several years.
    Computer literacy with proficiency in basic statistical analysis and Microsoft applications
  • Previous research output evidenced by publications

    Desirable Criteria:

  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects
  • Leadership experience
  • Medical qualification or experience of bacteriology
    OR

  • Experience of epidemiological surveillance work OR
  • Advanced statistical analysis skillsOR
  • Experience with genomics work OR
  • Experience with one-health work or veterinary research

  • Skills in development, budgeting and oversight of project proposals, leadership of meetings, and writing skills.
  • Evidence of supervisory ability and negotiation skills
  • Ability to work across cultures and evidence of communications skills in that context.

    Physical Environment/Conditions:

  • The post will be office based with a need to liaise with the laboratory and ward.
