    Job Purpose:

    Overall Job Purpose:

    To support coordination of research studies on nursing research; working closely with study investigators to deliver high quality research.

    This work focuses on examining nurses’ professional roles in management and policy development in human resources for health.

    It complements a second package of work that explores how measures of quality that are more specific to nursing care might be adapted to an African context to better inform workforce policy and management decisions.

    The study aims to qualitatively characterise the identity of the nursing profession and the agency of nursing in decision making roles using ethnographic methods such as interviewing, transcription and observation.

    A Qualitative Research Assistant Officer is needed primarily to play key role in data collection, analysis and writing up, with support from a wider group of behavioural and epidemiological scientists.

    Additionally, the assistant is expected to carry out observation at several hospitals outside Nairobi county, help plan, carry out and transcribe interviews.

    The position requires a competency in qualitative methods, experience in research, and some knowledge of clinical healthcare would be useful.

    Job Dimensions:

    The primary responsibility will be to assist in the implementation and write up of a research project entitled “The role of nurses in the delivery of quality of care”.

    Specifically, the job will entail “An exploration of how nurses, engage in policy and management at national, county and hospital levels and how the nursing profession’s identity may shape these roles and nurses’ authority”. The research will be carried out in three Kenyan county hospitals

    Key Responsibilities:

    For the Health Services Research Group to:

  • Identify additional relevant published and unpublished literature relevant to the study
  • Work closely with study investigators in developing observation checklist and work plans and updating research tools
  • Participate in organizing for interviews / meetings related to project activities
  • Participate in data collection which will include non-participant observations, focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with frontline nurses and nurse mangers outside Nairobi county
  • Write notes from observation of routine care provision in county hospitals and from proceedings of relevant county management meetings .
  • Comprehensive note taking is expected and good written English is important
  • Transcribe and translate (if necessary) completed in-depth interviews and focus group discussions.
  • Assist with data analysis, including preliminary coding of data and drafting the finding
  • Be responsible for record keeping and archiving of data
  • Ensure regular backup of the data collected
    Collate and provide information/feedback to the moderator/researcher through debriefing meetings.
  • Attend and take
    notes during project meetings.
  • And any other duties that may be assigned from time to time

    Qualifications:
  • An undergraduate degree public Health, Community Health and development, Project Management, Health Systems Research, Sociology, Psychology or its equivalent from a recognized institution. (Those with a nursing training background will Not be considered)
  • One-year relevant work experience
  • Computer literacy with proficiency in Microsoft applications

    Desirable Criteria:
  • Experience in conducting and taking notes of interviews or transcribing interviews
  • Applicants should have interest and ideally experience in health systems the Kenyan health sector
  • Interest in understanding of nursing practice and health care organizations
  • Experience with qualitative data analysis will be an added advantage
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills

  • Health facilities outside Nairobi City County
  • Willingness to travel outside Nairobi

  • Requires flexibility in the hours worked, with the priority being meeting the team’s research goals
