Project Description:

The Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) in collaboration with Washington State University (WSU) and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention seek to recruit a highly motivated and pro-active individual to fill in the following vacancy in the Burden of Respiratory Disease among the Elderly Study within the DGHP Branch.

The study aims to understand pathogenspecific incidence of respiratory illness among the older persons and estimate costs associated with influenza disease among the elderly population. The incumbent will report to the Site Principal Investigator and will supervise data collection, coordinate data entry, and conduct analysis of data.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in social sciences or a health related discipline; Public Health, Nursing,
    Clinical Medicine, Community Health, or any other Social Studies from a recognized institution

  • At least 2 years in project management of a community-based project in a research organization

  • Experience in managing large project fieldwork

  • Good analytical skills and experience of using at least one statistical package

  • Good Clinical Practice training

  • Good English, Kiswahili and Luo both spoken and written

  • Willing to reside in the study area

  • Ability to multitask and prioritize

  • Demonstrated maturity and capacity to navigate a complex environment and respond to shifting and fluid priorities

  • Ability to motivate, develop, and inspire colleagues and employees at all levels

    Specific Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Organizing and supervising the implementation of all field activities and performing necessary support duties

  • Serving as
    a principle source of information of study status and deliverables

  • Developing and designing local training and capacity building of project staff in collaboration with the study investigators

  • Liaising with relevant county and sub-county health management teams, MOH departmental heads,
    opinion leaders and community advisory boards

  • Under minimal direction, coordinating a wide range of research procedures and conducting a variety of complex tasks determined by the field and scope of the study

  • Drafting, editing and preparing correspondence, reports and other project related materials

  • Working as part of a team in contributing to the analysis of results under the direction of
    the project PI and data team, collating, managing data during data collection periods (monthly) and providing quality assurance/quality control

  • Coordinating and carrying out designated research tasks and projects, making use of selected methodology and materials, desk research, statistical analysis, or other investigative techniques

  • Support the submission of periodic reports of project status to the project investigators,
    regularly suggesting additional tests or modifications in current procedures
