KEMRI Laboratory Manager - Nairobi Jobs in Kenya


Key Responsibilities

  • Support Laboratory Director and Principal Investigators in leadership, planning, coordination and daily operations.

  • Lead implementation and continuous improvement of Quality Management System (QMS) in line with ISO 15189, GCLP, protocols and regulations.

  • Ensure accurate and timely results across pre‑examination, examination and post‑examination processes.

  • Drive risk assessments and implement corrective/preventive action (CAPA) plans.

  • Serve as primary laboratory contact for clinical teams, investigators and collaborators.

  • Establish effective workflows, roles, escalation pathways and communication structures.

  • Develop analytical plans for new research studies.

  • Provide audit oversight, manage non‑conformities and ensure timely closures.

  • Track and report Quality Indicators (QIs) and key metrics (TAT, compliance, feedback).

  • Coordinate shipment of biological specimens with proper approvals and documentation.

  • Strengthen laboratory‑clinic interface for specimen quality and timely results.

  • Manage regulatory compliance, inspections, training and accreditation readiness.

  • Oversee supply chain for reagents and consumables, including forecasting and inventory.

  • Manage participation in EQA/PT programs and corrective actions.

  • Ensure proper calibration, maintenance and validation of equipment and LIMS.

  • Maintain records, data management and documentation practices.

  • Enforce biosafety, chemical safety, waste disposal and occupational health standards.

  • Supervise, recruit, onboard, evaluate and mentor laboratory staff.

  • Manage staffing levels, schedules and promote continuous training.

  • Coordinate collaborations with partner laboratories and institutions.

  • Oversee SLAs, equipment contracts and referral laboratory arrangements.

  • Ensure integrity of laboratory samples and repository projects.

  • Advise Laboratory Director and PI on technical, quality, staffing
    and resource issues.

    Vacancy Requirements

  • Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences or related discipline (Mandatory).

  • Master’s degree in relevant science or laboratory field (Mandatory).

  • Minimum 7 years’ experience in busy clinical research laboratory (Mandatory).

  • Minimum 5 years’ management experience (Mandatory).

  • Experience in ISO 15189 accredited laboratory (Mandatory).

  • Experience in research/clinical trial testing (Mandatory).

  • Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) (Mandatory).

  • Scientific imagination for independent research execution (Mandatory).

  • Training in GCLP, GCP and Human Subjects Protection (Added Advantage).

  • Experience in laboratory audit processes (Mandatory).

    Skills & Competencies

  • Strong technical troubleshooting, analytical thinking and problem‑solving skills.

  • Ability to supervise, mentor and develop staff while managing priorities.

  • Strong leadership, communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.

  • Stakeholder management and collaboration abilities.

  • Proficiency in office applications and ability to analyze laboratory performance data.
