Project description

BOHEMIA (Broad One-Health Endectocide-based Malaria Intervention in Africa) is a Unitaid
funded project affiliated to the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) conducting a cluster
randomised controlled trial (cRCT) to evaluate ivermectin mass drug administration (MDA) to
humans and cattle for malaria prevention trial in Kwale county.

The project’s local implementing partner is KEMRI, through Kwale and Kilifi KEMRI Centers. The project is seeking to appoint an insectary manager to support the setup of an insectary in Kwale KEMRI centre.

Position: Insectary Manager (1 position) Job Grade: KMR 7

Location: Kwale,

Reporting to: BOHEMIA Project Manager

Position summary

The candidate will be expected to lead the setup of the insectary facilities in accordance with the
needs of an insectary specific to malaria vectors, establish a colony of insecticide-susceptible
Anopheles arabiensis using field collected larvae.

Job Specification

• Provide technical support for the root setup of an insectary lab.
• Draft SOPs for insectary maintenance, colony monitoring and quality assurance in
accordance with best practices.
• Setup monitoring systems: temperature, humidity, pupation rate, blood feeding and
oviposition rates.
• Lead larval and adult resting collections in Kwale for colony setup.
• Conduct insecticide susceptibility tests and selection of susceptible F1 mosquitoes for
colony setup.
• Oversee colony adaptation and stabilization to insectary setting.
• Cooperate with senior and junior scientists when needed for setting up of experiments.

Person specification

• Diploma
Certificate in a relevant field.
• KCSE with minimum D+.
• At least 5 years of experience maintaining a colony of Anopheles mosquitoes.
• Solid understanding of mosquito life cycle and biology.
• Experience with larval collections.
• Experience with adult resting collections.
• Experience drafting standard operating procedures.
• Familiarity with MR4 guidelines for Anopheles rearing and handling.
• Experience working in research environment.

Key Skills and Competencies

• Availability and willingness to work outside working hours if requested.
• The ideal candidate will also have a high degree of integrity, discipline and work ethic.

Desired but not essential

• Experience working in Kwale.
• Experience with CDC light traps and other mosquito collection methods.

Terms of Employment

One (1) year renewable contract as per KEMRI scheme of service. Probation period for the first
3 months. Salary is payable within the stated job grade.
