Job Purpose:

Improving maternal and infant mortality are key priorities in Kenya and internationally. The Kilifi Perinatal and Maternal Research Project (KIPMAT) aims to determine the burden and risk factors for adverse maternal and newborn outcomes in Kilifi County (www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01757028).

We are assessing the effects of HIV, maternal nutrition, malaria infection, bacterial infection, anaemia and other risk factors on maternal and infant morbidity and mortality.

Longer term morbidity and survival of mothers and infants, and the later consequences to children’s health is monitored through the KHDSS.

The outputs will enable better definition of maternal morbidity and adverse events in pregnancy and the perinatal period as we move forward into studies of maternal vaccines to prevent serious infections in infancy and other potential interventions.

Following completion of an intensive surveillance phase in the maternity department and antenatal clinic at Kilifi County Hospital, a continued surveillance of key data is ongoing.

The main purpose of the job is to provide data management and support to assist the project leaders to implement the network and several research projects on undernutrition and infection that are linked to it in order to achieve their goals and objectives, and to optimize the integrated output of these projects.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Be responsible for extracting data collected during intensive maternity and antenatal clinical surveillance, and subsequent ongoing surveillance.
  • Undertake linkage of maternity and antenatal data to the ongoing Kilifi Health and Demographic Surveillance System (KHDSS).
  • Work together with investigators to identify missing or implausible data, then catalogue, clean and code the data for analysis using SQL and STATA or R.
  • To provide data management support epidemiological analyses of these data and participate in analyses.
  • Assist in data management for related projects on childhood mortality, approximately 25% of time.
  • Maintain data integrity, security and confidentiality in line with the Programme’s policies and procedures.
  • To liaise with other team and departments within the research Programme to ensure smooth running of the projects
  • Ensure compliance with the staff appraisal process
  • Undertake other duties as assigned by the line manager or principle investigator.

    Qualifications:
  • Degree in Statistics, Mathematics or Computer Sciences or Information Technology or related qualification.
  • At
    least 3 years’ experience as a Data Manager.
  • Experience in Data Management for Clinical Research or trials involving handling of laboratory data.
  • Demonstrable experience in SQL and either STATA or R.
  • Demonstrable experience in writing reports in English.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft applications

    Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience in health research data management.
  • Previous experience in clinical research studies.

    Physical Environment/conditions:
  • The post is based in Kilifi at the KEMRI/Wellcome Trust Research Programme, Kilifi.
  • The post holder may be required to be available to work flexibly, out of hours as necessary.
