Job Description

Kelem International School is a preK-G8 school that was originally established under the Swedish Embassy in Ethiopia in 1946 but reopened as an independent not-for-profit school in July 2019.

Our vision is to become a collaborative center of learning in Ethiopia, where each and every child becomes a confident and self-realized global citizen.

Currently the student-body of 198 represent 27 different nationalities and the 21 teaching staff 4 nationalities, while majority of the teachers are Ethiopian.

Finance Manager Job brief

We are looking for a skilled Finance Manager. The Finance Manager will hold principle responsibility for managing all financial resources and transactions of the school and ensuring that sound accounting, payment and procurement procedures are put in place and followed.

The position will be responsible for the budget planning and execution, and will support the executive management team by offering insights and financial advice to allow them to make the best decisions for the organization.

Job specifications

  • Maintain financial records and reports for all accounts in the school
  • Establish financial manual for the school, detailing
    procedures and documentation for all types of transactions, including assigning transaction codes
  • Monitor funds based on a budget
  • Manage petty cash accounts
  • Initiate and process salaries for payment
  • Develop and maintain organized electronic and hard copy filing system for financial records for the school in an easy-to-access system
  • Coordinate with purchasing staff to ensure smooth purchasing procedures
  • Prepare expense report for quarterly financial review with the Board of the school
  • Ensure compliance with all Ethiopian laws regarding tax withholding and payments, accounting procedures, and retention of records
  • Advise the management of the school on ongoing and periodic investments to improve the school – procurement, capital investments, property management and others
  • Manage annual audit
  • Support other administrative and procurement functions to ensure smooth operations of the school as needed

    Required qualifications and experience:

  • Minimum of Bachelor of Arts Degree in Accounting and Finance; further training will be a plus
  • 5 years in a senior finance position
  • Work experience from community schools and NGO’s is highly desirable
  • Knowledge of finance functions (payroll, taxation, auditing, etc.)
  • Understanding of Ethiopian NGO finance laws and procedures
  • Proficient in MS Office; and other Finance Programs/Systems such as; Peach Tree Accounting
  • Command of written and spoken English and Amharic languages
  • Command of accounting skills
