Job DescriptionOverall Purpose of the Job.The Agriculture SHE Officer is responsible for planning, implementing and overseeing the department’s employee safety and health at work and environmental protection and management. His/her main duty is to ensure that the company is in full
compliance and adheres to Safety, Occupational Health and Environmental guidelines.
The person will be responsible for facilitating compliance with safety, occupational health and environmental guidelines. Their main goal will be to always ensure a safe working environment and prevent any injuries and accidents.
Key Responsibilities
Plan and implement SHE policies and programs
Advise and lead employees on various safety-related topics
Prepare educational and training sessions on a regular basis
Review existing policies and procedures
Work with HR to set up a new employee on-boarding process for safety, health and environment.
Conduct risk assessments
Enforce preventative measures.
Check if all the employees are acting in adherence with rules and regulations
Prepare and present reports on accidents and violations and determine causes
Oversee workplace repair, installations and any other work that could harm employees' safety.
Coordinate the department’s emergency procedures and act as the department’s emergency on site coordinator.
Inspect workplaces and workplace equipment, such as Irrigation, Agrochemicals, fertilisers, fuels, tractors and implements, to ensure they meet storage & safety regulations (and to identify hazards and risks).
Ensure personal protective equipment (such as hearing protection, chemical / dust respirators, safety glasses, footwear and safety helmets), is being used in workplaces according to the regulations.
Ensure that all the department’s activities and operations do not cause environmental degradation and that preventative and conservation measures
are always in place.
Ensure that the department has in place and complies with acceptable waste management and disposal procedures.
Ensure that the department has a chemical register for all products used on site and that there is full compliance with all international conventions on the use of pesticides.
Ensure proper disposal of expired chemicals and empty chemical containers after use.
Assist with the rehabilitation of workers after accidents or injuries
Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience
BSc/BA in Agriculture or Safety/Environmental Management or similar field
Experience, Skills and Competences
5 years of experience as a SHE Officer, two or more of which must have been in an agricultural environment or similar.
Certificate or Diploma in occupational health and safety would be added advantage.
Knowledge
Excellent knowledge of legislations and procedures
Excellent knowledge of potentially hazardous materials or practices
Experience with writing policies and procedures for safety, health and environment
Familiarity with conducting data analysis and reporting statistics
Proficient in MS Office
Working knowledge of safety management information system
Interpersonal Skills:
Outstanding organizational skills
Team player
Great interpersonal and communication skills
