Key Purpose

  • The incumbent is expected to lead the teams in the delivery of actionable insights by the JSE strategy team that provides support to the JSE through providing expert guidance regarding the inputs and decisions to influence JSE strategy.

  • The Head Strategy plays a leadership role in the business, leading the strategy management team in the development of long-range of strategic plans and objectives through the identification of strategic issues and opportunities that could influence business growth and profitability.

    Results Delivery

  • Manage departmental budget and apply cost effectiveness principles in planning and delivery to contribute to achievement of financial targets

  • Provide relevant input into the formalisation of the divisional budget

  • Craft departmental 5 year business plans to ensure delivery of focus areas for the year in support of strategy

  • Ensure that planning is effective by facilitating annual strategic planning sessions as well as day to day project planning

  • Lead the process to develop the overarching five year organisational strategy by identifying the key themes to address in the strategy session, the process to be followed and outputs to be developed in order to position the JSE for growth and sustainability

  • Identify strategic opportunities for the JSE and ensure development of recommendations for the executive team as to whether and how they should be pursued, by identifying size of opportunity, costs associated etc, in order to pursue opportunities that grow revenue/protect loss of revenue for the exchange

  • Ensure that the Strategy team produces quarterly thought leadership pieces and input into the CEO's report by providing guidance as to focus areas and conducting quality assurance on the final product in order to ensure that the executive team is able to make the right decisions based on the latest trends in the operating environment

  • Conduct monthly meetings with the different market areas to discuss/highlight variance analyses in comparison to revenue drivers to assist the different markets to obtain an oversight of the financials

  • Establish collaborative and trusting relationships with the business's key internal leaders and stakeholders in order to ensure that there is a free flow of ideas and information across the business leading to suitable strategy formulation and overall business performance enhancement

  • Collaborate across the organisation with the leadership , aiding in strategy formulation for different projects and initiatives

  • Engage stakeholders and network actively to build relationships and professional networks utilising social media, attending and presenting at conferences and training interventions.

  • Build strategic JSE / Industry/ Global network of thought leaders and relationships utilising social media, attending and presenting at conferences and training interventions

  • Build and enhance client relationships by understanding and analysing their requirements

  • Meet client expectations through follow up, communication and adhering to deadlines and deliverables

  • Conduct ongoing and targeted engagement with stakeholders in order to understand the market infrastructure environment and trends, build relations and position the JSE favourably through developing trusting relationships

  • Represent the JSE to external stakeholders in order to promote a positive image of the exchange

  • Establish internal client expectations of service delivery for the Strategy and Pricing teams and ensure that the team delivers accordingly in order to deliver on-time and relevant information and guidance to the business

    Transformation and Innovation Contribution

  • Analyse, research, develop and implement improvement/innovative ideas and value adding solutions that are game changers in how/what the JSE delivers

  • Introduce and ensure implementation of global best practice in support of divisional and JSE goals

  • Visibly lead the culture change to ensure a more collaborative culture and integrated way of doing things, aligned to the JSE values

  • Contribute to the meeting of divisional EE/BEE targets through appropriate recruitment selection decisions

    Minimum requirements

    Qualifications and Experience

  • Honours Degree in business management (Essential)

  • Masters (Preferred)

  • 8 - 10 years experience in financial markets, including 4-6 years experience in managing people

  • 2 to 4 direct Reports

  • 5 Indirect Reports
