Organizational Context The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is an international Catholic organisation with a mission to accompany, serve, and advocate on behalf of refugees and other forcibly displaced persons, that they may heal, learn, and determine their own future. Founded in November 1980 as a work of the Society of Jesus, JRS was officially registered on 19 March 2000 in Vatican City as a foundation.
JRS is present in over 56 countries worldwide, providing services to more than 811,884 individuals. The work is overseen by 10 regional offices with support from the International Office in Rome. In Kenya, JRS has two projects: an urban refugee project in Nairobi focussing on Education and Livelihoods and field project in Kakuma Refugee Camp focussing on Education, Integrated psychosocial inclusive Education programme in Centres and Safe Shelters.
Pathfinder is an integrated programme linking market-informed career counselling, post-secondary education and training, life skills coaching, job placement, and mentoring. It targets people living in or affected by displacement who may not have completed secondary education. Pathfinder aims to improve participants and their families’ quality of life by increasing meaningful employment, small enterprise development or pathways to further study.
The Career Guidance and Development Officer provides comprehensive career development services to participants seeking to plan and implement their career pathway. S/he reports to the Pathfinder Coordinator and is the chief interface between the project and its participants at the beginning and closing stages of their involvement with the project
This is a key staff position for a professional with analytical skills (labor market, personal attributes and competencies, educational landscapes), who understands or can study the local business environment, gain acceptance by, and understanding of, the communities in the local area.
S/he has a growth mindset, is solutions focused and can identify or elicit skills gaps and refer suitable candidates to prospective employers.
The Career Guidance – Job Placement Officer will:
Report to the Pathfinder Coordinator and works as part of the Pathfinder team;
Conduct pre-enrolment assessments and lead selection for the programme;
In collaboration with the participant, create career development plans detailing career goals and a step-by-step educational plan for their fulfilment;
If necessary, provide ongoing case management and amendment to the above;
Maintain accurate and up-to-date case files documenting participant goals and progress;
Develop relationships with employers who can offer suitable job opportunities for graduates of the programme;
Facilitate recognition of previously earned credentials, if necessary, by referral to local authorities;
Provide individual coaching or group instruction in resumé writing, interview preparation, job search techniques, or other skills related to career advancement;
Assist participants and employers as necessary with internship and job - placement;
Comply with and model all policies, procedures, and protocols of JRS.
Bachelor’s degree in business management, social science or related fields of study; or equivalent work experience;
Minimum of 3 years relevant work experience in human or commercial services fields;
S/he possesses skills in motivational interviewing, goal setting, and participant-directed approaches
Demonstrated success working and communicating effectively in a multi-cultural environment;
Demonstrated success in their own entrepreneurial initiatives preferred;
Solutions focused self-starter with proven ability to multi-task,
prioritize duties, manage time effectively working alone and as part of a team;
Demonstrates a strong desire to support the development of the local refugee and host community. Ideally the candidate has experience of success in his/her own entrepreneurial endeavours;
Fluent in the local commercial language and ideally that spoken by the refugee population, both spoken and written;
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
A combination of standard office environment and ‘field’ time in and around the service delivery area to perform the above outlined responsibilities;
Excellent interpersonal, listening and communication skills.
Ability to positively influence others and successfully reconcile differences.
A self-starter with a strong results orientation and with high levels of integrity, credibility and dependability.
An energetic team player who can effectively collaborate, and who can stand alone when necessary.
Passionate about advocacy for the rights and needs of people with special needs.
Ability to work in international settings and with various departments to implement successful approaches to psychosocial matters.
Demonstrated ability to work and deliver under pressure and tight deadlines.
Commitment to JRS mission, vision and values, and the ability to convey with enthusiasm JRS’s role in accompanying and serving forcibly displaced people and in advocating for their right to protection and a life in dignity;
High integrity, honesty and confidentiality; ability to deal tactfully and discreetly with situations, people and information;

Willingness to work in flexible, sub-optimal, stressful and unstable environment.
Excellent proficiency in written and verbal English; a professional working knowledge of a language spoken in the country is desirable. Knowledge of French and Arabic an added advantage.
