John Dau Sudan Foundation Program Coordinator, Health and Nutrition Jobs in South Sudan

The John Dau Foundation (JDF) built the Duk Lost Boys Clinic (DLBC) and opened it for patients in May of 2007 in the Village of Duk Payuel, South Sudan. The facility grew to become the hospital for Duk County.



In 2012, JDF established the first nutrition program in Duk County in partnership with UNICEF and WFP.


In February of 2014, violence in South Sudan had spread to Duk County displacing thousands of women and children and by September 2014, the security situation permitted JDF to once again resume operations in Duk County.


With assistance from UNICEF, CHF, and OFDA, JDF reinstituted nutrition and health programming in Twic East and Duk Counties. In partnership with UNICEF, JDF is now managing 2 PHCC’S and 3 PHCU’S in the Greater Twic County.

JDF is also working to re-institute health programming in Duk County with specific focus on rehabilitating and re-establishing health services at the Duk Lost Boys County Hospital.


Under the guidance of the Country Programme Director, the Programme Coordinator will be responsible for the timely and successful implementation of the health and nutrition programme deliverables.


The principal objective of is to coordinate the planning, implementation and monitoring of all facility level activities of JDF’s Health and Nutrition donor funded programmes.


S/he will be responsible to manage and lead a team of Health and Nutrition Project staffs to ensure quality program implementation in line with the planned budget; provide trainings to staff and partners, monitor program effectiveness and support surveys and assessments as well as efficient and effective implementation of integrated health and nutrition facility support component as per project plan, budget and timeline.


S/he will work in close collaboration with and active involvement of the State and County health officials, health staff of the target health facilities, Community Based Distributors and the communities.


Primary Responsibilities:



To coordinate planning and implementation of health and nutrition activities at facility level in Jonglei state within the agreed budgetary element, time frame and guidelines.


  • Take lead on the overall implementation of all Health and Nutrition activities in all target health facilities supported by JDF.
  • Ensure all health and nutrition activities at facilities are implemented according to South Sudan Basic Package for Health and Nutrition Services (BPHNS), other South Sudan Ministry of Health & donor guidelines.
  • Implement the community based migrant child survival project using Boma Health Initiatives strategy(BHI) and assist in producing high quality internal and external reports to donors and media
  • Prepare and submit budgets for the project activities to the line manager regularly, to authorize limited expenditure in line with the project budget and agree on the most effective management of the budget to achieve the project goals
  • Contribute technical support to relevant areas relating to the project for project partners, health service providers, care givers, and/or other community members.
  • To assist Programme Manager in building capacity of health project team, developing new projects and funding proposals, establishing and maintaining relationship with various working partners at State and local level.
  • Ensure nutritional supplies, medical supplies, drugs and vaccines at all health facilities are requested and supplied regularly and timely to meet the needs of the beneficiaries.
  • Promote active participation of County Health Department staff, community structures like the BHC, Facility In-charges and staff in problem identification, planning, implementation and monitoring of the Primary Health care and Nutrition activities.
  • Represent JDF in coordination meetings both at County and State level as required
  • Strengthen the coordination and collaboration between JDF, CHD, Health Facilities and community structures to promote services delivery and uptake.
  • Support the strengthening of capacity of Village Health Committee through and Health Facility staff to enhance community mobilization, participation and ownership.
  • Promote effective integration of programme activities at community level placing programme beneficiaries at the heart of JDF programmes.
  • Monitor the progress of the project through regular project site visits and by the development of effective monitoring and evaluation systems for this project with advice.
  • Ensure all health facilities provide quality Primary Healthcare and Nutrition services to the beneficiaries.
  • Support and train health facility staff to ensure quality is adhered to on day-to-day clinical and preventive
    PHC services (OPD, IPD, OTP, TSFP, EPI services) according to MoH/WHO recommended guidelines.
  • Support the health facility staff to ensure all assessments and treatments provided are properly documented on patients’ files and registers. And that the clinic is properly organized.
  • Organize the joint supervision and providing on job capacity building to health facility staff in areas of patient consultation/treatment procedures, management and day to day running of the services at all health facilities assigned to you based on identified gaps.
  • Ensure IMCI procedures and protocol are followed in the management of children under the age of five years at all health Facilities
  • Monitor nutritional supplies and drug movement and consumption in all the assigned health facilities.
  • Liaise with the CHD to plan, train and support health facility in charges and staff to independently manage the health facilities and ensure records are kept for all HF activities
  • Ensure universal precautions & safe waste disposal is adhered to at all health facilities.
  • Carry out quarterly health facility asset, medical equipment and items inventory physical count to update both the hardcopy and the soft copy register

    Oversee the implementation of Integrated Community Case Management (ICCM)

  • Plan and facilitate the training of Community Based Distributers (CBDs) and CBD Supervisors.
  • Supervise both assessment and treatment services, and the community level implementation of the ICCM programme.
  • Assist with community mobilization and health education activities.
  • Ensure the capacity building of Health staffs to enable them to facilitate ICCM training.
  • Train health staffs on the implementation of JDF’s ICCM package.
  • Provide line management and technical support to health staffs.
  • Assist in the review of the training materials to ensure quality training.

    Ensure the highest standards of Monitoring & Evaluation of health and nutrition facility activities to facilitate effective programme deliverables and reporting on expected results.

  • Take the lead in formulating technically accurate monthly plans and activity budgets for health and nutrition health facility support activities according to annual plans of each project.
  • Participate in the development and review of M&E plans for each project and other activities within the overall health and nutrition programme.
  • Ensure all health facilities have up-to-date tools for recording of all required health and nutrition data according to project M&E indicators/ Ministry of Health Indicators as well.
  • Train health facility staff, JDF MCH and Nutrition staffs and volunteers on the use of HMIS monthly reporting tools to assure quality of data captured.
  • Ensure women and children are screened, admitted, treated, discharged according to the national protocols and standard procedures
  • Ensure the medical assessment of all patients both health and nutrition are carried out in line with the national treatment protocols, randomly to conduct exit interviews to verify that beneficiaries received the treatment as per protocols


    Personal Specification


  • MPH or Masters in nutrition or required
  • At least 5 years’ experience of working in development/humanitarian setting
  • At least 4 years’ experience of working on health and nutrition programmes
  • Experience managing UNICEF and WFP nutrition programs


    Desirable Attributes;


  • Previous experience in implementation, monitoring and evaluation of health and nutrition programs, particularly in emergency context.
  • Strong knowledge of primary and community health care programs
  • Ability to organize and provide supportive supervision to CBDs, OTP, TSFP, SC, PHCUs and PHCC.
  • Work experience in health and nutrition services provision at health facility level
  • Experience in working with MoH staff providing capacity building
  • Demonstrated project cycle management skills
  • Ability to plan, lead and implement project activities.
  • Experience of capacity building and training of the local staff, in South Sudan context
  • Excellent analytical and report writing skills
  • Diplomatic and an effective communicator at all levels
  • Supportive personnel management style and ability to manage teams
  • Attention to details, accuracy and timeliness in executing tasks assigned
  • Excellent written and spoken English. Arabic is an added advantage
  • Strong computer skills particularly Microsoft Office Skills in working with partners and government line ministries
