Organisational Context

The Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) is an international non-governmental organisation with a mission to accompany, serve, and advocate for the rights of refugees and forcibly displaced people.

The organisation was founded in November 1980 and has a presence in over 50 countries. JRS undertakes services at national and regional levels with the support and guidance of an international office in Rome.

Organisational Context/Role

The Safe Haven Counsellor will be responsible for counselling and child therapy sessions for all beneficiaries in the JRS Safe shelters and other SGBV survivors in the community.

Under the direction and supervision of the Safe Haven Coordinator, he/she will take responsibility for all counselling activities in the Safe Haven Program.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, coordinate, monitor, offer counselling services to the refugees in the safe shelters and other survivors of SGBV in the community.
  • Develop Counseling tools for counselling sessions.
  • Develop child therapy tools and carries out for children in the safe shelters.
  • Monitor the progress of the counselling program to ensure adherence to set targets and agreed implementation time-frame and take follow-up actions in conjunction with the Program coordinator.
  • Make recommendations for further follow up on individual counseling cases.
  • Develop/update training modules on counseling and methodologies and carry out training to incentive staff to assist in the implementation of program services.
  • Provide assessment, guidance and in-service training to the incentive staff.
  • Contribute to reports writing and provide weekly reporting on activities.
  • Ensure that the principle of confidentiality is adhered to.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation and reporting tools.
  • Be actively involved in advocacy on behalf of refugees.
  • Working and counseling groups, communities, and individual sgbv survivors.
  • Evaluating clients through conversations, interviews, and observations to determine correct testing or examination.
  • Developing a treatment plan that may include counseling, medication, or other services.
  • Setting clients goals and discussing treatment plan.
  • Helping clients discuss experiences and emotions in group therapy.
  • Assisting clients through difficult life changes and challenges.
  • Educating clients on strategies and coping skills.
  • Accessing client’s needs, and developing strategy to help them.
  • Maintaining good working relationships with support networks, implementing partners, and community resources.
  • Advising and guiding clients
    through difficult decisions.
  • Carry out an in-depth assessment of needs of survivors, especially those who have undergone severe trauma to address these needs with a multidisciplinary approach.
  • Helping sgbv survivors with a variety of issues such as substance abuse, bullying, anger management, depression, relationships, stress and suicide.
  • Offer any other support in the project as may be required.

    Qualifications

    Education

  • Undergraduate degree/Diploma in Counseling with proven professional experience.

    Work experience

  • 2 years’ experience working as a counselor in emergencies and protracted crisis.
  • Experience and knowledge of community based delivery of Counselling services.
  • Experience in Child Therapy will be an added advantage.
  • Experience in working with vulnerable and unaccompanied children.
  • Experience of cross-cultural delivery of social services, particularly in refugee/IDPs settings.
  • Experience in managing people/teams and delivering training.
  • Demonstrated experience and commitment to working with marginalized communities.

    Language
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) and excellent writing skills.
  • Fluency in Kiswahili.

    Technical Skills
  • Strong analytical, reporting, strategic thinking and planning skills.
  • Strong monitoring and evaluation skills/experience.
  • Knowledge of project cycle management.
  • Good knowledge of MS word, Excel/Office.
