  • The Internship Programme targets young, talented students and graduates willing to gain practical experience in a field relevant to the Organization through their involvement in daily working activities in migration-related areas and/or in public international administration.

  • The Regional Migration Health Unit in Pretoria is responsible and accountable for technical coordination on regional matters of Health Promotion and Assistance for Migrants and Migration Health Assistance for Crisis Affected Populations Programmes undertaken by IOM in the Southern African region.

  • Under the overall supervision of the Regional Director for Southern Africa and direct supervision of the Regional Migration Health Programme Coordinator with technical guidance from the Regional Thematic Specialist for Migration Health, the intern’s duties and responsibilities are to provide support for the unit.

    Roles and responsibilities and include:

  • Collect and systematically organize and analyse existing information from academic and governmental sources dealing with migration health to support the development of quality concept papers, , presentations, technical guidance notes and information sheets;

  • Support the identification, assessment and documentation of emerging best practices based on work done by IOM in migration and health, including under the Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights – HIV Knows No Borders Project, and IOM’s current response to health emergencies, including COVID-19.

  • Develop a database to track and describe existing national, regional and international recommendations and strategies related to the management of migration health issues in the populations concerned in Southern Africa.

  • Assist in the writing and review of technical project reports, drafting manuscripts for publication, editing of project concept papers and proposals, donor reports and other publications referred from the country missions to the Regional Migration Unit;

  • Support regular updating and development of external communication materials including fact sheets, success stories and promotional materials;

  • Contribute to IOM’s participation in regional meetings, conferences, seminars and workshops when needed;

  • Perform other related duties as may be assigned

    Required Qualifications and Experience

    Education:

  • Advanced University degree in Public Health, Health Administration, Epidemiology, Social Sciences or related field of study

  • Bachelor degree in Medical or health sciences with experience and/or a strong interest in public health and migration.

    Experience:

  • Public health program management, proposal development, research & publication and technical report writing

  • Strong interest and motivation in assisting vulnerable/disadvantaged populations groups

  • Professional level of English (writing skills)

  • Strong personal commitment to efficiency, flexibility and ability to work effectively and harmoniously within a team and with colleagues from varied cultures and professional backgrounds

  • Excellent Computer skills (Excel, Work, Outlook, Power Point Presentation) & statistical packages such as Stata, and SPSS

  • Languages: Fluency in English is required. Working knowledge of Portuguese and French is advantageous.

    Eligibility and Selection criteria

  • In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who;

  • Have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;

  • Are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies;

  • Are sponsored by governmental/non-governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor;

  • Are enrolled in the final academic year of a first University Degree programme;

  • Are enrolled in a graduate school programme (second University Degree, Masters’ Degree or equivalent, or higher);

    Have graduated with a University Degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year of graduation.
