Internews is seeking a Project Director for a one-year Humanitarian Media Project in the refugee camps in Kenya.

This project aims to strengthen health and protection for refugees in Dadaab, Kakuma and Kalobeyei settlement, by increasing the quantity and quality of trusted, timely, inclusive and engaging life-saving information.

This position entails providing technical expertise to Journalists and Community Correspondents on two-way communication in the refugee camps mentioned above.

The position will require frequent travels to the camps.

The Project Director will be responsible for direct oversight of the project, ensure compliance, managing subgrants, and providing capacity building to local partners; overseeing the overall humanitarian journalism trainings, program implementation, including trainings, mentorship programs and production stipends to Journalists and community correspondents in the above-mentioned sites.

The Project Director will provide strategic guidance and leadership for the program; coordinate technical, legal and professional capacity building assistance to journalists and partners; ensure proper oversight of Internews personnel, financial management and administration; manage and give technical assistance to the Subgrants under this project.

The Project Director will also be responsible for establishing strong partnerships and dialogue with UNHCR and the Implementing Humanitarian Organizations in the Refugee Camps.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide general oversight of the program, including strategic program management, budget management, fiscal integrity, quality and timing of deliverables, and coordination with partners.
  • Manage and give technical assistance to the Subgrants under this project; ensuring quality content, approving reports and payments.
  • Design and lead technical activities, including media assessments, humanitarian journalism training and mentoring curriculums; overseeing and leading content production for humanitarian radio programs.
  • Capacity building of local community correspondents on information gathering techniques, humanitarian communication, including behavior change communications, script writing, and technical aspects of mixing program content.
  • Reinforcing and expanding two-way communication channels and systems between Humanitarian agencies, and local community groups and individuals.
  • Exploring new ways of engaging with communities and channeling their feedback to humanitarian service providers.
  • Managing and driving research activities (including surveys, focus group discussions etc.) to learn and build the program.
  • Overseeing and building preparedness
    and security measures for staff living and working in the site.
  • Managing the project administration, HR, contracts and finance.
  • Manage Internews staff and consultants that provide technical assistance to local communities, community correspondents and partners.
  • Exploring new ways of engaging with communities and channeling their feedback to humanitarian service providers.
  • Communicate challenges facing the project and articulate the project’s successes in meeting those challenges.
  • Responsible for the quality, cost, and timeliness of performance of all work performed under the funding contract.
  • Responsible for the Monitoring and Evaluation of the Project.
  • Prepare Quarterly and Project reports.
  • Understanding of and demonstrated commitment to upholding Internews’ Core Values.

    Qualifications
  • At least 5 years of professional experience as a Project Manager for a humanitarian organization, with strong Subgrant management skills.
  • Experience working for humanitarian media or in humanitarian settings OR Experience in managing media development projects.
  • A successful track record in supervising, designing, managing, and implementing technical assistance for donor-funded media projects and proven ability to develop and monitor work plans, training plans, and procurement plans.
  • Strong knowledge of media development and humanitarian media.
  • Experience in Communicating with Communities (CwC) and Accountability to Affected People (AAP) frameworks a plus.
  • Fluency in English and/or Swahili; knowledge of Somali and/or a South Sudanese language a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a national staff and an international team of consultants.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, necessary to maintain good relations with relevant stakeholders.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • USAID or USG experience is preferred.
