Background/IRC Summary:

The IRC is currently working in over 25 countries around the world, addressing both the immediate and life saving needs of conflict affected people in emergencies and the reconstruction needs of post-conflict societies.

The IRC was registered in Uganda in mid-1998 and implements rehabilitation activities in the sectors of Child and Youth Protection and development, Health, Economic recovery and Development and women protection and empowerment as well as contributing to the response to the Southern Sudanese Refugee situation.

IRC Uganda has a head office in Kampala, field offices in Kitgum, Karamoja, West Nile and in Kiryandongo.

Position: Registered Nurse

Reporting to:Clinical Officer

Location: SouthWest (Bundibugyo, Bunyangabu,Kagadi, Kyegegwa, Ntoroko) and Mid West (Hoima, Kikuube)

Duration: 10 months

Job Purpose

To facilitate deliveries and provide quality nursing services and public healthcare interventions to patients, mothers, babies and the community.

Key Outputs

  • Patients received, admissions, deliveries, discharges and deaths registered;

  • Treatment to patients, antenatal care provided;

  • A clean and healthy environment for patients maintained;

  • Sterile procedures prepared and carried out;

  • Medical wastes safely disposed off;

  • Bedside nursing procedures carried out;

  • Doctors/Clinical Officers Ward rounds carried out;

  • Patients prepared for meals and sensitized on the recommended diet;

    Knowledge and skills imparted;

  • High risk cases for referral identified;

  • Provide care during labour with emphasis to prevention of complications to mother and baby;

  • Care during puerperium provided;

  • Mothers sensitized about benefits of breast feeding and recommended diet;

  • Medical supplies and sundries requisitioned and accounted for;

  • Staff supervised and appraised; and

  • Daily ward reports compiled and submitted

  • Allocated resources managed
    and accounted for.

    Key Functions

  • Receiving patients, registering admissions, deliveries, discharging and deaths;

  • Provide treatment to patients; antenatal care and identifying high risk cases for referral;

  • Maintain a clean and health environment for patients;

  • Prepare and carrying out sterile procedures and disposal of medical wastes;

  • Participate in bedside nursing procedures as a member of the caring team;

  • Participate in Doctors/Clinical Officers Ward rounds;

  • Prepare patients for meals and sensitize them on the recommended diet;

  • Impart knowledge and skills to health support staff and trainees;

  • Lead nurses and midwives staff meetings (if any)

  • Manage and accounting for allocated resources.

  • Provide care during labour with emphasis to prevention of complications to mother and baby;

  • Provide care during puerperium with emphasis on prevention of infection;

  • Sensitize mothers about benefits of breast feeding and recommended diet;

  • Requisition and accounting for medical supplies and sundries;

  • Carry out HRM functions such as training and staff performance appraisal; and

  • Compile daily ward reports and hand over to in-coming shift.

    Education

  • Must be trained at a registered level from a recognized Nursing-Midwifery Training Institution.

  • Must be registered and licensed with the Nurses and Midwives Council.

    Experience

  • At least two (2) years

    working experience as a Registered Nurse.

  • Guidance and counseling;

  • Concern for quality and standards;

  • Ethics and integrity; and

  • Time management.
