Background

The Resilient Cities Initiative is part of the One CGIAR 2030 Research and Innovation Strategy to strengthen the vibrant, largely informal urban and peri-urban agrifood sector to help improve sustainability, equity and opportunity growth, and to mitigate risks to human and environmental health.

The Initiative aims to enable sustainable production of nutritious foods in urban and peri-urban zones through scaling of innovations, building inclusive and sustainable food markets that foster the provisioning of nutritious food in urban food environments, and strengthening consumer demand and access to healthier diets.

The recently completed Development and Delivery of Biofortified crops at scale (DDBIO) project of the International Potato Center (CIP) tested innovations for the scaling of Orange-Fleshed Sweetpotato (OFSP), a nutritious Vitamin-A biofortified crop that is gaining prominence in Kenyan urban diets and is produced in rural and peri-urban areas of the country, and therefore offers important linkages with the Resilient Cities Initiative.
