International Livestock Research Institute Research Associate I – Molecular Biology (IITA) Jobs in Kenya;The Research Associate will focus on construct development and molecular biology techniques including DNA extraction, PCR, Southern blotting, qRT‑PCR, sequencing, mutation detection, and bacterial culture maintenance. The role contributes to ongoing research in plant genome editing and trait enhancement within a multidisciplinary team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop genome editing and RNAi constructs.

  • Perform genomic DNA extraction from transgenic and gene‑edited events of crops such as date palm and sugarcane.

  • Conduct PCR and qRT‑PCR to assess gene expression and verify mutations.

  • Perform mutation detection assays (T7 endonuclease, band‑shift analysis).

  • Carry out Southern blot analysis for gene copy number and integration.

  • Conduct sequence analysis using Sanger or next‑generation sequencing.

  • Maintain and propagate bacterial cultures for plasmid DNA preparation.

  • Contribute to maintenance of gene‑edited plant lines in lab and greenhouse.

  • Ensure accurate data collection, analysis, and record‑keeping.

  • Assist in preparing reports, presentations, and manuscripts.

  • Collaborate with team members and provide technical support in molecular techniques.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

    Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or diploma in
    Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Genetics, or related field.

  • Relevant professional certification.

  • Two years’ relevant experience with degree, or four years with diploma.

  • Experience with in silico gene cloning tools (Benchling, SnapGene).

  • Hands‑on experience with DNA extraction, PCR, qRT‑PCR, and sequencing.

  • Familiarity with Southern blotting and mutation detection assays an advantage.

  • Ability to maintain detailed lab records and follow protocols precisely.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for collaborative research.
