International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Humanitarian Affairs Adviser Jobs in Kenya

Responsibilities:

  • Develops, under the supervision of the Regional Humanitarian Affairs Adviser, a strategy for engaging religious scholars in a dialogue on humanitarian issues and ensures implementation of the strategy;
  • Maintains and develops contacts with a wide range of religious circles and related stakeholders, including religious scholars, religio-political leaders, heads of educational institutions, students, humanitarian organisations, media and other organisations;
  • Contributes to analysis and mapping of relevant stakeholders for a better understanding of the religious circles landscape in the region;
  • Contributes to the promotion of dialogue on the areas of convergence between IHL and Islamic law in order to raise awareness and promote respect for humanitarian principles and values;
  • Monitors political and security events and changes within the region that could have humanitarian consequences and have an impact on ICRC humanitarian activities;
  • Assists in, and progressively takes more responsibilities for, organising workshops, round tables, seminars and courses for religious circles, and manages a small budget for organising such events;
  • Helps to explore means to improve public communication in collaboration with Communication departments;
  • Writes institutional reports, such as minutes of meeting, analysis and project proposals, and contributes to
    internal meetings and discussions;
  • Works as focal point in the delegation for briefing new staff members, both local and international, on humanitarian affairs.
    Provides support to the ICRC staff in other locations, whenever needed.

    Requirements

  • Master of Arts degree in Humanities/Political Science/International Relations or a relevant fields;
  • Sound knowledge of the Islamic world including Islamic movements; knowledge of Islamic law is an asset;
  • 3- 5 years’ experience as an academic/ researcher/ consultant/ analyst;
  • Excellent English and Kiswahili communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Working knowledge of Arabic will be an asset;
  • Confirmed capacity to analyse the political, security, humanitarian and social environment;
  • Ability to manage, analyse and summarise large amount of information;
  • Ability to build and maintain a large network of relevant stakeholders;
  • Well-developed computer skills.
