  • Innovations for Poverty Action seeks a Research Manager for the Malawi country office.

  • The Research Manager will oversee research project (s) and will be responsible for the overall management of these projects, including assisting with hiring project management staff, engaging with PIs, and coordinating with partner organizations and government stakeholders.

  • As part of their supervisory role, the Research Manager will work closely with the various country office teams (Finance, Administration and HR) and the Global Research & Data Support (GRDS) team to ensure that effective support is given to projects and that projects are aligned with IPA Malawi and global practices.

  • The Research Manager is also expected to work closely with the Country Director to support office operations relevant to their projects.

  • The Research Manager will interact regularly with various Principal Investigators, to ensure that projects are implemented well, and will engage implementing partners such as the Ministry of General Education and other local stakeholders.

  • The Research Manager will also contribute to the development of new projects, policy outreach, and capacity building within the office.

    Responsibilities

  • Directly supervise research staff, and lead transitions, onboarding of new research staff and maintaining institutional memory of project activities.

  • Ensure project adherence to general research design, sample selection, data management and general research protocols, and overall project management timelines.

  • Keep the Country Director apprised of all developments on the projects within their portfolio and serve as a key link between the country office, project staff, and Principal Investigators.

  • Support systems and structures to build staff capacity and lead training on data management protocols and general project management principles for new project research staff.

  • Ensure that project deliverables, such as reports and financial statements, are submitted to donors and partners on time.

  • Oversee project financial management, including creation and monitoring of project budgets, tracking expenses, producing financial reports and projections, and ensuring smooth integration of projects into IPA financial systems.

  • Promote inter-project best practices and take a lead in sharing best practices with projects through formal and informal trainings
    Work with country office support staff to ensure sound human resource and operational management of projects.

  • Represent IPA and attend meetings with local government officials, donors and other partners to promote IPA’s activities in-country and ensure success of programmed activities.

  • Work with PIs on research design and writing of grant proposals and support overall Project Development efforts.

  • Support the Country Director in the implementation of sound human resource, financial and operational policies and procedures, and compliance with organizational and Malawi laws, standards and research ethics requirements

    Qualifications

  • Masters in development economics or a field related to international economic development.

  • At least three years of project management experience.

  • Extensive experience conducting social science or economic field research or experience conducting field research in developing countries required. Background in randomized control trials is strongly preferred.

  • Extensive experience supervising data collection, teams of field workers, survey design and implementation, and data management.

  • Advanced knowledge of quantitative data collection relevant to measurement and instrument development.

  • Experience with data management and econometrics. Advanced knowledge of Stata or any statistical package is preferred, as well as data collection software such as Survey CTO.

  • Strong quantitative, budgeting and financial management skills required.

  • Cultural sensitivity and demonstrated ability to work successfully with diverse constituencies required.

  • Experience interacting with partners, government officials and other key stakeholders in a developing country context.

  • Experience with presenting research findings at public forums, including to non-research focused audiences.

  • Strong attention to detail, with a quality-focused mindset.

  • Ability to work independently and problem-solve, as well as enlist the support of other teams within the organization.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills and complete fluency in English is required.

  • Demonstrated experience in writing project proposals and/or grants, preferably for international field research.
