Job Purpose:

The purpose of this post is to participate and assist in all forage regeneration and characterization field activities of the forage genebank

Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for managing the green housework.
  • This involves planting of seedlings, watering and monitoring of plants during growth.
  • Checking and recording accessions in the greenhouse and filling data inventory sheets for planting and removal.
  • Prepare pots and sterilize soils for pre-germination of forage seeds and planting seedlings in the screen house.
  • Scarification of forage seeds before planting.
  • Assist planting in Shola site and follow-up on the field work and supervise laborers.
  • Prepare and spray agro-chemicals for pest and disease control in the green house and field.
  • Characterize forage plants, record data and take herbarium specimens.
  • Maintaining and multiplying, by vegetative means, rescue plants of forage species in the green house.
  • Collect forage seeds from the green house and Shola site and prepare for threshing.
  • Keep the green house clean and tidy at all times.
  • Willing to work on weekends to assist with watering of plants in green house and the supervision of laborers.
  • Any other field and screen house activities as may be reasonably required.

    Minimum Requirements:

    Education

  • Diploma or High School Certificate

    Experience:
  • One year experience for Diploma or High school certificate with three years relevant experience in seed production or genetic resources activities
  • Knowledge in relevant field and use of simple tools and equipment
  • Experience with forage crops is an advantage

    Skills:
  • Good understanding of forage agronomy and forage
    seed production
  • Effective communication in English and good interpersonal skills
  • Rigorous approach to monitoring progress of tasks
  • Ability to drive a motorbike will be an advantage
  • Knowledge in relevant field and use of simple tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of handling agrochemicals/a spray certificate would be advantageous
  • Monthly Base Salary: Birr 8,500 (Negotiable depending on salary history of the candidate).

    Terms of appointment:
  • This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position, initial appointment is for three year with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding.
