The position will be expected to support the GENDER Impact Platform on generation, analysis and strategic communication of robust and impactful scientific research and evidence in the field of gender and social inclusion in agri-food systems.

The role will report to the GENDER Impact Platform Director.

The incumbent will work closely with the GENDER Impact Platform Director and Science Officer and will be coached by the Science Officer.

This is an exciting opportunity to engage in gender research in agriculture for development and contribute to the GENDER Impact Platform’s consolidation as a premier research resource on gender in agricultural research for development and Impact Platform in the CGIAR.

The position will allow the incumbent to strengthen their publication record by publishing with different research teams.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct scientific research in the field of gender and social inclusion in agri-food systems including through conducting literature and/or evidence reviews, collecting and analysing data, and writing various research outputs or communication products and/or assist the Gender Impact Platform Director and Science Officer in such endeavors

  • Review and perform quality checks of research output that will be published by the GENDER Impact Platform, including Gender Platform Working Papers, Evidence Explainers, Briefing Notes, and other Gender Impact Platform resource hub items and/or assist the Science Officer in these activities.

    Assist the Gender Impact Platform communication team in checking social media releases for scientific soundness

  • Manage and/or assist the Gender Impact Platform Director and Science Officer with the management of research projects, including follow up with research teams on deliverables and quality of research outputs; and, in the event of problems with specific research projects, (assist in) troubleshooting content

  • Manage and/or assist the Gender Impact Platform Director and Science Officer in the platform’s engagement with OneCGIAR Initiatives around the Impact Area Gender, Youth and Social Inclusion

  • Together with the Gender Impact Platform communications team, write and consolidate scientific achievements of the GENDER Impact Platform into effective fit-for-purpose communications materials (in print and online) to influence policy, inform key stakeholders, donors, media and other key audiences and/or assist the Gender Impact Platform Director and Science Officer in such endeavors.

    Prepare and/or assist in preparing technical and policy commentary based on the work of the GENDER Impact Platform when required by the media, key stakeholders, or donors.

  • Together with the Gender Impact Platform communications team, organize research workshops, webinars, or other events on specific gender research themes or strategic Gender Impact Platform work and/or assist the Gender Impact Platform Director, Science Officer, and module leaders in doing so. Participate in and follow up on such events; and if needed, write reports on the events

  • Other research tasks and research communication that emerge within in the mandate of the Gender Impact Platform


    Requirements

  • M.Sc. in a relevant discipline, including gender studies, development studies, agricultural economics, development economics, international development, public policy, political science, sociology, anthropology, geography, or other social sciences

  • At least three years of experience
    in conducting high-quality robust gender and development research and gender in agricultural research for development

  • Well versed in gender and development research, preferably in the domain of agriculture and food systems, and/or gender in agricultural research for development with good knowledge of state-of-the art theory and evidence in the domain of gender and development and gender in agricultural research for development

  • At least one (co-authored) publication in an international peer reviewed journal (book (chapter) or equivalent) and a number of other scientific publications (e.g., working/discussion papers published by a research or science-based organization) in the field of gender and development research and gender in agricultural research for development

  • Conversant with (quasi-)experimental impact evaluation, quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods for data collection and analysis

  • Excellent writing skills

  • Ability to respond to ad-hoc research or communication needs and to deliver successfully under short time constraints

  • Proactive and well-organised

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across disciplines

  • Fluency in English

    Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Able to conduct statistical analysis of quantitative data using software such as STATA, R, SPSS or equivalent programs

  • Able to conduct qualitative data analysis using appropriate software such as e.g., Nvivo or equivalent programs

  • Post location: The position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya

    Terms of Appointment

  • This position is at job level HG 13 and it is only open to Kenyan nationals. The position is a 3-year contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
