ILRI Research Fellow – PhD Studies - Mitigating Agriculture-associated Antimicrobial Resistance in Poultry Value Chains Vacancies in Uganda


On behalf of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Bioversity International is now seeking for a qualified candidate to serve as a Research Fellow.

Both ILRI and Bioversity International are CGIAR Research Centres.

Under the supervision of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) Scientist, the Research Fellow will contribute to the project Antimicrobial use and resistance in poultry production chains in Uganda and the associated risks to human health.

The specific focus of this PhD fellowship is to investigate how the use of antimicrobials links to the occurrence of Anti-Microbial Resistance (AMR) and residues in poultry and assess resulting public health risks.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate antimicrobial use in targeted poultry production systems
  • Map AMR risks in the poultry production chain
  • Conduct prevalence studies to define prevalence of antimicrobial resistance and residues
  • Assess risks for human health resulting from antimicrobial use in poultry production
  • Contribute to development of training materials for interventions
  • Thesis and publications write-up

    Requirements

  • Ugandan national
  • Relevant MSc degree (Veterinary Epidemiology, Public Health or similar) from a recognized university
  • Background
    in poultry production is an asset; demonstrable affinity with research on AMR or zoonotic diseases
  • Knowledge and experience with field surveys and risk assessment, bacteriological laboratory experience is an asset
  • Proven ability to work in interdisciplinary teams and interest in working within a multinational research program
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in English, especially regarding academic writing and presentations
  • Successful applicant will be expected to secure university admission to a PhD program within 3 months
