ILRI Research Fellow – PhD Studies - Control of Peste Des Petits Ruminants Jobs in Uganda


On behalf of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), Bioversity International is now seeking for a qualified candidate to serve as a Research Fellow.

Both ILRI and Bioversity International are CGIAR Research Centres.

Under the supervision of the ILRI Scientist, the Research Fellow will contribute to the project Epidemiology of Peste des Petits Ruminants.

The overall objective of the project is to better understand the infection dynamics of the Peste des Petits Ruminants virus (PPRV) in selected production systems and the importance of other small ruminants’ diseases. The research would also aim to evaluate the biological impact of certain interventions especially vaccination under selected livestock production systems in Uganda.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a detailed research proposal within the objectives outlined above and in accordance with the registering university
  • Develop tools and protocols to assess the incidence, prevalence and the associated risk factors of PPRV in selected small ruminant production systems
  • Lead survey teams in field data collection
    Conduct laboratory analysis of samples to estimate prevalence of the PPRV in the selected production systems
  • Curate data collected for storage in a publicly accessible repository
  • Build mathematical models to better understand PPRV infection dynamics and impact of interventions
  • Analyze and
    interpret data
  • Thesis and publications write-up

    Requirements

  • MSc degree in Veterinary Epidemiology or relevant disciplines
  • Good understanding and experience in smallholder livestock production systems in Uganda
  • Proficiency in mathematical and simulation modelling software
  • Evidence of initiative and ability to work independently
  • Ability and willingness to travel extensively in rural areas to conduct fieldwork
  • Ability and willingness to spend considerable periods in challenging rural locations for field work
  • Ability work in large multicultural multidisciplinary teams
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills in English
  • Excellent data management skills
  • Successful applicant will be expected to secure university admission to a PhD program within 3 months
